Do you have urinary incontinence after prostatectomy & radiation?
Hello, I underwent a prostatectomy in Sep 2017. Gleason score of 9 with a positive margin. 8 months later began radiation tx with rising PSA. As of this date my PSA's have been undetectable however, I continue to have moderate to severe incontinence. I have seen two urologists with one suggestion the male sling and the other the artificial urinary sphincter for relief. I'm looking for any men with experience in either of these procedures and your comments. Thank You

Sam60, thanks so much for sharing your details with AMS. The surprises must be terrible both mentally and emotionally. Hope you can find a workaround to prevent such things.
There must be some real variation in the way these things operate. After I find and skin back my penis it takes a fairly hard squeeze to activate AMS. But then it’s great (as long as my aim is decent). And maybe one more good squeeze and I”m empty. My only worry is that the arthritis in my thumb(s) progresses. Even if I have to use a pliers I”m not going to give up.
I hope. You can find some adjustment to the AMS that can hep.
Tomf, I encourage you to keep bugging your friends about PC and to keep checking their PSA. I’ve badgered my two sons, both in their 40’s, till they got a baseline PSA. And same for friends. What surprised me is so many of them also had PC but never mentioned it.
We all gotta spread the word. We could save a life or a life-style.
Good luck to both of you and all our PC brothers. We need it with God’s help.

2 ReactionsSame here, after radiation, AND the Eligard every 6 months. Not really incontinence, just urinating all the time.
Drink a 20 oz bottle of water, pee every 15 mins for 3 hours. Annoying and disruptive. Anyone else have this?

2 ReactionsPlease read my previous post. I had this problem and was treated with SANS (Stoller Afferent Nerve Stimulation). Dr. Stoller is vice chair of urology at UCSF and was my doctor. This procedure is non invasive and is widely available. Sort of like a targeted, enhanced acupuncture. It really worked for me.
My husband had 2 rounds of Bulkamed injections after his prostate removal. It’s kind of like Botox. He was very satisfied with it. He most likely will have one more after he finishes radiation.
我的手术是根治,2023年元月7日手术,至今尿失禁。有问过医生吊带和安装人工扩约肌均有问题,所以我不准备这些。现在在做提肛,效果不出院时好些。估计这辈子就是尿袋相伴了

Thank you for your detailed explanation of your experiences. I have just had my RP on 1/12/26. I am so fearful that I will have a similar experience like yourself. I am 57yoa. My prostate was very large at 95cc. Surgery took 5.5 hrs vs the estimated 3hrs. I had to have catheter for 2 weeks and after getting it removed I have zero bladder control. If I move, I am peeing. I get some relief laying down but when I sit up, peeing. Then stand up more pee. I have spoken to Dr's nurse and all I get for a response is "it's way early, healing takes 3-6 months." Well I am extremely worried that continence will never return. I too did kegals before surgery. I am told to wait 6 weeks before continuing kegel physical therapy. This is why I am here. I have searched far and wide for some direction and answers. Oh I forgot to mention my surgery was supposed to have successfully spared the nerve bundles. Has anyone transitioned from total incontinence to continence?

3 Reactions@mgarrett9ball I am 7 weeks post-op and my situation is similar to yours, maybe I am a little better and maybe I can see a little progress over time, but still mostly incontinent when walking for more than a couple of minutes.
I am remaining hopeful that it will get better, doing kegels, working on getting approval to start PT/pelvic floor training, surgeon wants me to start on drugs to treat possible UTI and drug to stop bladder spasms (have not started either drug yet).
Have finally gotten into a better routine (pads, pull ups, changing throughout the day, etc) to keep myself dry and skin healthy.
It's easy for me to get discouraged, but keep thinking of the 3 month milestone, hoping for improvement by then. Also count my blessings that (as far as I know) surgery has made me cancer free, and small setbacks are worth the price.
Good luck! Hope this gets better for you.
@mgarrett9ball
They do say during some of the conferences about prostate cancer that continent can come back within a year for most people. You are very early in your post treatment.
There are many solutions if your incontinent is not Improving significantly over the next few months. This is not a problem that will last your lifetime, If it continues for a long time, you can take advantage of one of Treatment options available. Hopefully your case will be like most other people, and you will get continent back.

2 Reactions@jeff1963 thank you for your encouragement. I tried condom catheter today for the first time and I am really impressed by how it has affect me physically and emotionally. I am learning with research that it's not a 24/7 fix but to go without pads for even a day is well worth it. I purchased on Amazon and can't say if one is better than another. I think getting the right size is key.
