Severe Peripheral Neuropathy
I have been diagnosed with Severe Peripheral Neuropathy in both feet, ankles and lower legs below the knees. I am scheduled to have a partial knee replacement removed and a total knee replacement put in its place. The partial was done 15 years ago, and the new knee is scheduled for March 9th. Should I be concerned about further nerve damage from the surgery? My surgeons N.P. says its a routine surgery even with the neuropathy, I find that a little hard to believe so I'm reaching out for suggestions and others experiences.

@jms1954 I now believe that when I go for the consult to assess me for an SCS implant I may get a steroid shot. Has anyone had that.
@crowhunter have you tried this - neuropaway
Has anyone had a steroid injection for neuropathy pain?
@blowerk1216 any side effects like diarrhea?
@botterd nothing like that so far
@crowhunter I would be checking the nerves in your back. I do have neuropathy in feet because of chemo, it subsides before next treatment, but the numbness in my thighs comes from nerves in my back being compressed. I have sciatica right now and wearing back brace. The thigh numbness has gotten worse over the last 6 months and happens if I stand too long in one place or sit with my back arched a certain way. Have you had medical imaging done of your back?
I have noticed with friends and a sister who had knee surgery, that those that faithfully did the before-surgery exercises plus the post-surgery exercises, recovered the most mobility afterward. It does entail some discomfort, but if you can exercise (stretches, etc)they recommend before/after surgery, the eventual outcome will be better.

2 Reactions@carol1024 Have had MRI of back. several past surgeries may be the cause.
@phyllisq
I went to Mayo Clinic Rochester Mn in 2017 for EMG and hoped for remedy. All he suggested was Gabapenton and "the Germans use Alpha Lapoic acid with some success.
He also told me it wouldn't get much worse. In 2019 I had Scrambler treatment in Fla with a specialist with that treatment. He then told me that I can get same treatment in Minnesota at Mayo clinic. I then talked to a nurse at Mayo and because it was not covered by any medical plan I have, declined to go. I tried to revisit my original Neurologist at Mayo and they wouldn't take me in without a referral, even though I am a regular patient.
You should call the Jacksonville Clinic and see if they have a different and more comprehensive plan and specialist in neuropathy. At least get a diagnosis of the type you have. I have idiopathic axonal PERPHERAL NEUROPATHY. I have heard that there is a type of ultrasound diagnoses that provides more specific types of neuropathy. It doesnt have the needle pokes with an EMG.
Best of luck and hope something works for you.
