Post gallbladder problems.
Is there any way to get rid of the constant nausea and diarrhea after gallbladder surgery? I can only eat just a few bites then I am sick. At point I am starting to get weak

1 ReactionI got a referral to gastroenterology and am having some tests run to see what is causing my pain and diarrhea. Endoscopy with Ultrasound, colonoscopy, and SIBO test. Possible CT if those tests do not show the cause. In the meantime, while I wait on the tests, I have been advised to add bulk, such as psyllium husk to my diet.
Gallbladder removal was 1.5 years ago, and these issues started this past summer, so 1 year post-surgery.

1 ReactionI experienced a sharp, intermittent pain right where my gall bladder wss about 7 months after my laproscopic surgery. It would get worse when I exercised (fast walking) I went one year with it before we tried an ultrasound guided steriod injection into the abdominal wall and a modified TAP block. It seems to have worked :). In my case perhaps s nerve of part of the muscle became irritated from the surgery. I did nit have much nausea like you, snd I have SBS plus other elimination issues; thud, I had diarrhea prior to my gallbladder removal. Hoping for answers for you.

1 ReactionI feel Gallbladder removal affected many changes but I hope my story helps you! I Had my gallbladder removed in 1995 and was told I had IBS so take fiber. I tried diet changes, I gained weight, my cholesterol climbed like crazy, I developed LPR (silent reflux) and a Hiatal hernia. Many of these issues can occur after gallbladder removal - I believe this is what happened to me. It wasn't until 2023 that a new primary doctor listened to my timeline and said, 'you don't have IBS, you have bile acid diarrhea (BAD). I went on Cholestiramine and it cured the BAD and high Cholesterol! I began choking when I ate and an endocrinologist did a scope and found I had LPR (silent GERD) and it caused a ring of scar tissue in my esophagus that they had to stretch to relieve my choking issue. I was put on PPI's (which should be taken for less than 3 months I was told I'd be on them for life) and I finally chose to go off them after 3 years. I learned there were other options that MNGI never told me about. I now take Durable Acid Relief (natural ingredients) trying to ease LPR and heal my esophagus, don't eat within 3 hours of bed-time, raised my pillow a bit, sleep on my left side as much as possible. I don't have acid issues and the choking issue has not returned so far and I've been off PPI's and BAD meds for over 3 months. I really feel all issues were related to my gallbladder removal. I needed the gallbladder out, but I definitely had a lot of problems occur after removing it. I hope this is helpful to you!

2 ReactionsFirst, I'm sorry you're going through this. When I had my GB out, no one told me that there was a possibility of diarrhea afterwards.. I just assumed that my body was adjusting to no GB. I tracked what I ate thinking that there must be some trigger, but there was no pattern.
It gradually got better, so gradually it was hard to tell it was improving. Somehow, the issue came up a few years later with another doctor. That's when I learned the diarrhea after gallbladder surgery is not unusual and that there is even a drug (by now, maybe several) that can be prescribed to control it.
It's my understanding, but don't take this as absolute truth, that the medication is different from medication usually given for other diarrhea. Diarrhea after gallbladder surgery is usually result of bile getting dumped directly into the digestive system.
Since I didn't know this was a thing, I didn't check with my Gastro or surgeon. I lived with it and kept trying to figure out if there was a food trigger.
This was years ago before smart phones, and when the Net didn't have much information about things like this anyway.
Maybe other doctors tell patients this is a possibility. If they don't, they should. Good luck to you and I hope you get some answers and feel better soon.

1 Reaction@schmidty, thank you for sharing.I wonder if ANY doctors tell patients that they could have postcholecystectomy syndrome after their GB comes out. I think that's the official term for problems after gallbladder surgery as in ongoing pain, etc..
Last I knew, some doctors thought it was "controversial". Translation: they don't believe it.
Not a doctor, but hearing post cholecystectomy syndrome in a vacuum doesn't tell the patient much.
Then there is a related mystery.. what if your issues are caused by something completely unrelated to your GB or surgery? There an old saying that dogs can have fleas and ticks too. Maybe there's a correlation between your later symptoms and the surgery. But maybe medical science has yet to establish causation. Maybe doctors can't say for sure that these things are linked even if it's not rare..
Keep for answers.?
