Has anyone not had any treatment after non-invasive tumor removed?

Posted by iborg @iborg, Dec 27, 2025

My urologist said it’s my choice. Either don’t do the 6 week treatment or not. and check bladder in 3 months. Has anyone else not taken treatment and faired well?

Hi daddyroxx2025,
Luckily, I have only had minor problems with the catheter insertion. My urologist had done it the 1st 2 or 3 times
and she was very smooth.
At the start of the treatments, however, she had her assistant do it and she was little rough the 1st time and inserted it too
fast. I asked her during the 2nd treatment to insert it slower and that solved the problem. She recommended that I take a deep breath and hold it until I felt the catheter enter the bladder - that did help! I just kept saying to myself "I don't want cancer"!!! BCG has kept my cystoscopy tests looking good, so I will just accept the discomfort and continue the treatments as long as needed.
I'm quite sure that they wouldn't discontinue your treatments because of your catheter problems - they are professionals and will find an answer! Don't let cancer win!!!
Good luck and let us know how you slayed the beast.

I had early grade, non invasive BC a decade ago with just a turbt. And no treatments other than follow up cystoscopy. It was NED for a decade. Just returned so still early stage. I really don’t want anything else but will listen to options when I get to Mayo. Dorothy

My doctor said the same only added the treatment was very pain related so I hose to have the annual scope checkup. After 5 yrs a different type more aggressive tumor occurred in the same area of my bladder as the low grade tumor,. Now I do 6- month check ups with the scope. I’m looking elsewhere for a different treatment than what was first offered. So I believe a call to Mayo will be my next step to fighting this cancer besides excising these tumors and waiting for new ones to appear.

@colleenyoung Huh. I was sure I had replied to this weeks ago but do not see it now. Yes. you have it right. I have now had 2 of the 6 BCG installments. The first was very smooth. The second also though I then experienced some difficulty with intermittent urination accompanied by minor pain on the second and third day following.

As far as a cancer team... no cancer team involved. Just working with urologist. Is that typical? I figure if a tumor ever reappears then I will get a cancer team involved.

@iborg, sometimes a urologist is the only specialist required. I mention "team" only because the surgeon, the symptom management nurse, social worker and others can also be considered part of your cancer team. 🙂

I had non-invasive tumor removed 2016 no treatment. Yearly scopes and have been negative for 10 years. Good surgeon and luck involved in guess. But have MGUS with rising counts don't know if its related but 6mos check-ups for that. Only symptoms are fatigue, muscle weakness and sweats. Hope you have good results with your therapy.

@catpaws1948, MGUS is an English acronym meaning Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. You read more about it here:
- Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mgus/symptoms-causes/syc-20352362

Members in the Blood Cancers & Disorders support group sling around MGUS pretty readily because it is related to the development of altered plasma cells and increased risk of multiple myeloma - a blood cancer. Here is the Bladder Cancer group it is less known.

You're right that there are a lot of abbreviations and acronyms in medicine. I think you'll also agree that spelling out monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a handful to type. 🙂

@gpspanea, do I understand your correctly that you were diagnosed with bladder cancer 10 years ago and you also have MGUS?

Thanks for the english. I see now why acronyms are used so readily. No I don’t have that MGUS just bladder tumors 2 so far in 5 years.

BCG has minimal side effects! I went in, they installed into bladder by catheter & i went home, 2 hrs later you urinate it out. I had a little stomach discomfort but worked the next day thru 1 yr of treatments(12total). IF its available @ shortages at your dr, DO IT! Ive had NO recurrances in 5 yrs
