I was recently diagnosed with corkscrew esophagus. What do I eat?

Posted by bee2023 @bee2023, Oct 30, 2023

I was recently diagnosed with Corkscrew esophagus. I lost my appetite before and I still don't have one. What foods am I supposed to eat to help me? Is this condition curable? Goggle told me it's a rare condition. Does anyone have the same condition as me. Please let's exchange notes. Thank you in advance. Am a 55 year old single woman

@squirty - hello, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm really sorry to hear you are actually choking on your food due to the hiatal hernia and that your esophagus is a corkscrew now. I totally get the wish to just be normal.

Hoping members in this discussion such as @jlharsh @margo42 @kassisgrass @rozy288 @speechprof44 and @chamlinyoung will chime in about whether they have had this choking issue or developed thrush.

I'm guessing you have a gastrointestinal doctor who diagnosed you with IBS and gastroparesis, and maybe a GI surgeon, too, who removed your hernia? Have you had the chance to ask those medical professionals about what to do with the choking and the thrush?

Thanks for the introduction, @lisalucier. It is nice to meet you, @squirty.

I am glad to hear you see your thoracic surgeon Monday. I am hopeful you will hear good news!

A lot of my health experience is different than yours though like you, I do not have an appetite, either. I do eat but low body weight has been a concern. There was a time when the best way I could eat was to blend my food. I get concerned to hear you having to limit your diet to drinking hot tea and juices.

I would like to hear how Monday’s appointment go and hope you come back and provide an update.
