An as an FYI, I was diagnosed with ADHD and Autism in my 50s. Finding a provider qualified for ASD assessment in adults can be difficult. It can also be helpful to look toward primary care providers with specialities as well. My initial ASD assessment was through my primary care MD.

Autism diff ways for you and me. I have a grand-daughter at 14 years-young. Somèuse meds or some nott. Some read/sing/walk around and some not. Very few friends but thier families are great. No toughong (sp?) or few holding as hugging. It’s easy and hard.

I have had difficulty with finding doctors. My son was diagnosed when he was 3. They did a genetic test for me and diagnosed me with autism and adhd as well as him. It is difficult to find doctors who can recognize it, but some people can tell just by talking to me for a few minutes. There are subtypes of autism as well, so some of them are more difficult to discern. Are you willing to travel to somewhere other than Nebraska? I am having to travel across the country for my care because the doctors near me are either retiring, moving to bigger clinics or not specialized. I find that autism tends to be more specialized especially for adult diagnosis.

I agree that finding support can be difficult, whether it is for yourself or your child! Like you, many people who are "tuned in" will realize there is something a bit different with me, and others on the spectrum. It's really nice to have their understanding, isn't it?

How far are you from Omaha, Nebraska?

Omaha, being a big city has so many Developmental centers for adults w Developmental issues.

They have professional team members who may be able to help your son.
My son w Autistic disorder is 35 yrs old and lives in s group home along w five others, who are like him. ASD,
as you know has different levels in different people in terms of how high or how low their functioning levels afe.
Their team will test your son to measure his functioning level.

Also, please be aware that Autism and ADHD are two different diagnoses. Treatment for both differs Most
of the time, for example, when my son was little, he used to sit and shim for hours, if I let him. No ADHD there.
But, when you try to teach him speech, his ADHD shows up. He cannot concentrate or sit still. He is totally nonverbal and lives in a group home w others, who are like him. He functions okay at the age of 35 now. He
is different now than when he was little.
Things do change. Work w your child' special ed team.
They can help you.
