How to fight cisplatin side effects like nausea & fatigue?

Posted by kamrin @kamrin, Jan 12 3:34pm

I've been feeling so tired, and it's only been week 1 of chemoradiation for Hpv 16+. I cant imagine how the end of treatment is going to be. I know it's different for everyone but can it be minimized?

Biotene was recommended to me for dry mouth by radiation doc. Getting some soon.

Looking for suggestions from those who have possibly run into
this situation with chemo treatment.
Met with med oncology doc yesterday after missing a week
due to multiple complications from the cesplatin . Asked if I was ready for another
treatment for which I said no, don't want to go through that again.
Asked Is there some other chemo drug
instead ?
Was basically told that is all he could offer , had the best cure rate etc. but could go with a lower dose.
I declined the lower dose and went home.
I'm pushing 70 and my body just can't handle that particular drug.
So. not wanting to burn any bridges which I haven't, I am suppose to think about it and call if I change my mind'
Needless to say I am disappointed in the response I got.
I do believe there are one or two alternative options
that are almost if not equally as good, less toxic and suitable for HPV + .
I'm all eyes and ears if anyone has any input because I am stumped. I was hoping to have one more cycle, but not with cesplatin.

@woodsy1, there are other options, but im not sure if there is a reason why your medical team wont give you it. Best to do some research and get a second opinion.

Had a phone call with oncology nurse today to discuss my chemo dilemna.
She talked to the doc and called back with an offer for a 1/2 dose of cesplatin.
So accepted that and will also get a blood test which I inquired about sent to Naveris which
analyzes for fragments of circulating tumor DNA. Its a fairly new test so if you have this HPV + cancer
it can be a great tool for monitoring treatment progress or test if you still have cancer or not.
Turnaround time about 7 days from arrival at their lab.
It is pricey so make sure your ins. will cover it but its waaay cheaper than a PET/CT scan. FYI

So the OTC Biotene helps quite a bit for the dry mouth and also throat after you spit out
the initial tablespoon full and saliva production increases. Probably going to ask for some of the RX magic mouthwash today though , a lot of sores are popping up.
Back on chemo yesterday at 1/2 dose cesplatin. Down from 74mg to 37mg.
Snow day Monday so only 4 days radiation this week. #18 today. Hanging in there so far.

@woodsy1 I finished my 18th radiation out of 30 as well. Food tastes horrible in my 4th week, now I've lost about 2lbs, nothing drastic yet but need more options

30 huh ? well at least they are not asking you to do 35 which I'll never make it to.
I am considering 24 though seeings my cesplatin was skipped for a couple weeks then reduced to 1/2. See what it looks like Monday. Hang in there we are getting close to the end hopefully and cured as well.
Comparing notes what drug and dose and how many chemo cycles are you gerring ?

6 cisplatin cycles at 40mg, I also had Tors surgery and neck dissection. Ive had every symptom from chemo, even the rare ones. Im hoping for this to pass quickly. 2 more to go.
