I was taking 3200 mg of gabapentin a day for almost 3 years and it impacted my memory severely. I’m trying to wean myself off and for my first time I’m finally flying into the Mayo Clinic to meet with a competent neurosurgeon. Vanderbilt’s operated twice Chattanooga is operated once and all I have is an auxiliary nerve that is compressed in my shoulder and nobody can seem to get it fixed. January 28, 2026. I am praying for a miracle when I get up to Phoenix to see the doctor for the first time from Dayton Tennessee.
I'm taking 3600mg a day and could have some side effects, but it's hard to tell what's causing what since I take 9 different prescriptions for several issues.

@mrmacabre 3600mg of gabapentin is a LOT! I was taking 2400mg for several months having it increased over a year and a half. It made me drowsy and off balance. I' ve pared myself down to 1500mg. Which still seems to be effective for pins and needles feeling in one foot.

@cleveland26 According to my doctor, that's the maximum dosage allowed, and I've been taking it for a few years now. Once it loses what little effectiveness it's having on the pain what am I supposed to do? As far as I know, there's nothing else out there that can offer any kind of relief.
@dlexvold Only side effect for me is constant "mental fog" which lifts when I come down on the MG levels. Otherwise, the worst would be withdrawals if I take it too far outside the time frame. Be forewarned. Otherwise, no troubles with this med. Good luck to you!

@mrmacabre About two months ago I saw The Ojai Doctors on youtube. Three doctors, MD's, who give their opinions on health and medicine. They have all, on several different videos, said that gabapentin is in their opinion one of the most over subscribed medications. Since seeing that I have cut back, on my own, my dosage from 2400mg to 1200 to 1500, depending on the day. ( I am a 78 year old man with type 2 diabetes with mild peripheral neuropathy.) I just today started taking r alpha lipoic acid. I have found since decreasing the gabapentin dose than I am less drowsy and my balance is better. The peripheral neuropathy is no worse. I don't have any advice as to an alternative unfortunately. I wish you all the best.
For me it was constipation. To offset that, I used Citrucel .
ED in 40% of men who take it. About the same for its cousin PreGabalin. Other than that I have no SE from either one.

5 ReactionsI'm not able to take Gabapentin, as it makes my limbs swell and I feel ill.
