Transdermal HRT

Posted by vkmov @vkmov, Oct 19, 2023

Many studies have found that transdermal HRT protects and builds bone without all the horrific side effects of many first-line osteoporosis treatments. The patch bypasses the liver and thereby avoids the risks of breast cancer, strokes, etc. Has anyone explored this or discussed it with their doctors?

To follow up on my posts about hrt...The bleeding stopped when I put on a new Esterdiol patch. My pelvic ultrasound showed that everything was fine. I have used the Estradiol patch for 5 months. I take a pill for the progesterone, instead of the Combo parch. The cost is only $30 per month. Note that hrt supports bone and brain health.

@tkdesign

Had you been told that hrt would rebuild bone?

@gravity3 No, but help maintain possibly. It has not done that either.

@seapen

Not sure if I asked this before. Do you also have testosterone in your hrt plan?

No testosterone. My gynecologist did not mention testosterone. Would this help my muscles? I have lost a lot of muscle even though I exercise quite a bit.

@seapen

Might be worth exploring with your doctor.

@bayhorse I guess it depends. My endocrinologist said she could not prescribe due to my age and at any rate could not manage. I found someone else however.

Who did you find to prescribe it? I am having the same issues and not finding it easy even though the blackbox restrictions have been lifted.

@codythedog My gynecologist is Dr. Allen Clark at Maine Healrh in Brunswick Maine. I had never seen him before. He said that he was giving me hrt because he thought that if he did not give it to me, I would go to a clinic to get it and it would be better for me to go to a real doctor! Seemed like an odd thing to say, since he had never met me before.

@codythedog You might check for menopause consultants at an academic medical center. You might also follow youtube and podcasts for doctors who support HRT in older women. You might have to drive!

I started HRT in my late 40s, already having osteoporosis, and though I've been using for a few years now, have had no increase in bone density. I think there are many factors whether it will help or not.

@tkdesign: I also was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my early 40s and started ERT at 48. I didn't gain bone but I didn't lose bone either after starting ERT. I was able to maintain what I already had. Also, my gynecologist told me that there were studies that indicated that ERT actually improved the "integrity" (the word she used) of the bone itself. As a side note, I have fallen quite a few times in the past 20 years and my primary care doctor has said, "Well we know your bones are in a lot better shape than they flag on a DEXA scan."
