New to kappa light chain testing

Posted by rosemary73 @rosemary73, May 4, 2024

Hi! I am new to this free light chain results as I had blood work done last August by a hematologist. I had high Kappa free light chain of 26.0 but the other two tests lambda and ratio were normal. The hematologist said my tests that she tested me for were normal. After experiencing some health issues lately I did my own research and discovered my light chain results myself as my red blood count stays somewhat low. I informed my PCP of my find and she referred me to a cancer specialist. On his first findings my Kappa light chain has gone down to 22.2 and the other two tests were normal. I'm new at this and am scared to death that it could be Cancer etc. Can anyone that has had experience with this inform me a little more. I do have another appointment scheduled with my Cancer doctor. I haven't been diagnosed with anything yet but am so scared of a cancer diagnosis..

Hi @jt123, some people with MGUS can have M protein (M spikes) in their blood. Has your diagnosis of MGUS been confirmed? How are you doing?

I was anemic and that is when they found it. My dr set me to an oncologist. He did blood test and said it looks like you have MGUS and we will watch it. I have been on three times and it has stayed the same. The last time was a year ago this coming August. He had said i can see yo in six months but i dont think that is necessary a year will be fine. My father had
This which turned into cancer. I will be 80 and the dr said it could be very slow moving and i would be a lot older before it might happen. Im a little confused.

Hello All,
My name is Vince and I am new to the forum and to IFL C blood chemistry.

I've been at the Rochester Campus for the last week being seen for cardiac rythem issues. Now waiting for the storm to pass to get home.

The results of an Echocardiogram noted some left ventricle thickening.
That lead to IFL C testing where an abnormal Kappa free light chain S of 2.45 was found.
Lambda Free Light chain s was normal at 1.75 and a normal Kappa/Lambda FCL ratio of 1.4
was noted .
When the Echo report was posted it noted that there was suspicion of cardiac amalydosis, hence the reason for testing.

The test was last minute at the end of the day on Friday and the results posted to the portal after the clinic was closed.

It all does have me worried and I found this forum and thought I would ask if anyone had some insight in what this chemistry
Might indicate or suggest. The last I talked to the provider she wasn't very familiar with this
And was going out of the department to help interpret the results.

We'll, it's a long wait for me so I thought i'd put this out there for comments .

If anyone can give an overview or help explain what all this is, and how serious it is ,I would really appreciate it. There are many here that seem to be very well read on the subject matter.h

Thanks
Vince

@cousinvinney My Kappa FLC bloodwork level of 5 was ten years ago. IF you have MGUS, is usually does not progress to other problems. If you don't have a oncology hematologist, request one and ask for testing to determine if you have MGUS (it is more complex than just a Kappa or Lambda number). Additional tests are necessary to determine IF you have amyloidosis. I have minor left ventricle enlargement and slight thickening, but it is from having been an exercise fiend. I have an irregular heartbeat when I get glutened (celiac). That is one of the problems with early results; they can be worrying, but until your doctors interpret them, one is left with scary possibilities.
