I have pencil stools that are getting narrower
Hello, I have noticed about 6 months ago that my stool is narrower, about 3/4". I told my PCP and he referred me to a gastroenterology. I will be having a colonoscopy on March 3rd. During my wait, I'm noticing that the stool has reduced to 1/2". I also do have external hemorrhoids. I'm scared. What can I expect to be the outcome.

I have noticed I have pencil size for years but colonoscopy only shows internal hemorrhoids and metamucil or metamucil causes more bulky stools . PRAYERS

1 Reaction@frouke IBS also presents with thin stools quite frequently. Try some fiber to bulk it up.

3 Reactions@popobrady Definitely agree about seeking diagnosis sooner rather than later. I had problems that I was afraid to face and ended up being rushed to the hospital with a perforated colon due to tumor blockage. Looking back I can’t believe I let myself get that sick before getting medical help.

5 ReactionsCan you get an earlier colonoscopy ? I had noticed smaller diameter stools also. They found a tumor, looked like a polyp on steroids. It was cancerous. Had section of colon removed. They tested 22 lymph nodes and they came back clear. Oncology doctor said I didn't need chemo or radiation, but will monitor my blood work every three months and colonoscopy will happen every year. I did not have to have a temporary ostomy bag. I was dreading that. But I will have to accept reality of the outcome no matter what. I am now ( 2 months later ) testing for prostate cancer. I read what I can but get information overload. I am challenging the urologist and not winning any browie points doing so.
Please if you can, insist on a colonoscopy sooner. Time can make a difference. My tumor was growing quickly. Not to scare you just to make you aware. Do not put this off please. Keep writing.

3 Reactions@lockmith tight on about colonoscopy ! Just do it, not fun, but can spare you suffering and even save your life. Regarding pencil-thin stools—while there may be multiple causes, in my case, reporting it pronto to my team got me tested right away and my surgery date moved up- prompt action caught a blockage before it went really bad and ruptured.

2 ReactionsPlease make sure they check your hemorrhoids as well for cancer. I had cancer under my hemorrhoid. I wish you well.

1 ReactionUPDATE FROM MY COLONISCOPY ON 2/ 04
Hello everyone,
Happy to say no problems found. As, per doctor, pencil stools can be due to aging, lack of adequate water and fiber in my diet. Also, I have a small internal hemorrhoid. He recommends 1 tblsp of metamucil daily.
Thank you all for your concerns and responses.
Good Health, strength and happiness to all.

2 Reactions@lockmith I’m new to this issue despite posting many times in past 18 months over my prostate surgery and radiation. I’m very nervous I may have signs of colon cancer now . Three weeks ago I had 4 days of small thin feces that were black , mild stomach cramps , excessive gas , now I’m having yellow stools which start out normal then minutes later change to diarrhea. I e been prone to off and on diarrhea for years but scared to think I might have to go thru another battle with cancer . I have to wait 3 weeks for a colonoscopy, should I wait that long or try another Dr . ?
