Looking for affordable hotel recommendations for Mayo, Rochester

Posted by apainter @apainter, Jan 5 6:44pm

Hi all!
First-time Mayo Clinic patient here. I was told to plan a 5–7 day stay. Looking for lodging that’s affordable, clean and safe. Not fancy, just comfortable and not sketchy.
Any recommendations are appreciated!
Thank you!
Amy

I have found that The Hampton Inns in TN give room discounts for people traveling to town for medical treatments. This was true for me in Lenior City and Oakridge, TN. I suggest when calling hotels near the Mayo Clinic that you ask if they have medical discount for those traveling to town.

@silverstreak You're correct. The Rochester hotels do have Mayo patient discounts. If you call the Concierge, they can give you the hotel comparisons for those discounted rates. To be listed with them, the hotels have to meet certain standards. The hotels further from the clinic cost less, and those withing walking distance cost more. I have also stayed at the Hampton Inn in Rochester, and it was nice and they had some hot soup in the lobby in the afternoon and a free shuttle to the clinic. I need a full kitchen, and with my food issues, a free breakfast doesn't help me, so the Candlewood Suites doesn't have the "free" breakfast and can keep the rates lower instead.

I live in Rochester, and due to Mayo upgrading and building a new building, the construction downtown is bad—many detours and some travel congestion.

I strongly recommend staying at a hotel connected to Mayo by subway (walk) system. Though they may be more expensive. 2nd alternative is a hotel with a shuttle that will take you right to the door of Mayo / Gonda building.

Check Mayo's construction site for more information:

@roch I was just there for a procedure at the Gonda bldg. There's nothing like staying at the Kahler Grand in the winter. The subway connects to everything and the roof top pool is stunning. It's worth the extra $ if you're not staying long. Stores and restaurants in the subway also.

The choice for accommodations depends mostly on why you are visiting Mayo and the particular buildings you will need to access. Many bloggers gave excellent recommendations that worked well for them. I was there for heart surgery and we chose the Holiday Inn Express 155 16th Ave because I was to be a patient in St Mary's. It's 0.2 miles/5-minute walk from the hotel; you can see the entrance from the hotel driveway which made it easy for my hubby. Discount for patients, free parking and breakfast were other considerations. It was nothing fancy but was clean and the staff was excellent. The shuttle bus stops there periodically.

I have stayed numerous times at the Fairfield Marriott. The staff is wonderful there. It is clean and they have free breakfast and a shuttle to both campuses. I don’t usually take the shuttle. I usually just drive a few blocks to one of the ramps, but the shuttle comes often. I hope this helps!

Hello, I will be visiting Mayo in Rochester in mid-February.
I would love some hotel recommendations.
Does Mayo have preferred hotels and/or do any hotels offer special rates for patients at Mayo?
It would be great to be connected via skywalk or tunnel, but not absolutely necessary; a short walk would be fine.
I am considering the Centerstone Plaza Hotel. The rates are good, they have a shuttle, and offer free parking. Any thoughts or experience with them?
Alternately, I am looking at the Kahler Grand Hotel simply for its proximity to Mayo. Is construction in the area completed or is it difficult to get around?
I am absolutely open to other suggestions. Any thoughts or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

We like staying at the EVEN HOTEL. We get a discount from MAYO. It is a short walk to St. Mary's from there. And a short drive to the Mayo Clinic.

@essablue I love the convenience of The Kahler. I use their valet parking. I have not been to Mayo during winter, so I can’t vouch for accessibility, etc, but in Spring and Summer, you can walk to nearby restaurants as well as many medical offices.

@essablue
Kahler Grand Hotel has Mayo patients rate.
Love the valet parking and you don’t even need to step outside for anything your whole stay. Subway level has access to all your appointments, shopping and dining. I recommend The Old Brick House.
