Let's hear the positive outcomes from anyone who had spine surgery

Posted by sherrym25 @sherrym25, Dec 30, 2025

Hey everyone, I know we have several people scheduled for spine surgeries in January.
Looking to hear how each of you are doing and what your current situation is. So many people are in this group and it’s so easy to get lost unless we keep up with what is going on with you.
I am one year post op T11-L4 fusion at the Phoenix Mayo Clinic for a 40 degrees scoliosis curve.

I recently read a statement someone made on a Facebook spine surgery page from a person answering a question. The question was, why don’t we hear positive results from surgery. The other person answered and said because those who have positive results have moved on and are living their lives. I really believe this is true. My surgery was amazingly positive, but I still feel the need to hang in here and cheer others on. I hope those of you who have positive results will do the same in the future.
We are all here for you.❤️🙏
Sherry

Good Morning, Sherry,
Glad to hear your doing well and thank you for the good wishes!
Your experiences that you share about your progress, let's other like me, know what to expect.
Good luck with tapering off the Gabapentin, I know it can be a slow process. What was your high dose of Gabapentin?
I had the same hunch about why my calf/ foot numbness increases when I walk up hills. But I have tried to make certain I don't lean forward, only taking small steps, and it still happens. 🤔
May you have continued success and improvement--and be riding those horses before you know it!
🙏😊🙏

@nlback22 Hi Nadine & Sherry i’m still at the rehab facility going back to Mayo Wednesday for x-rays and probably staples removed. Hopefully heading back home after that I’m so happy to be reading the two of youse remarks comments conditions again I’ll probably have to go back and read them again in 6 to 8 months maybe a year when I get to where you guys are but I’m heading that way. My surgery was successful. Dr McClendon and Dr. Chandan are great surgeons and I am so proud to have had them fix me up. I look forward to their continued care and you choose continued comments and I’ll be putting up thing or two about my journey in here too. I’ve got a lot to say, I just can’t do it on this iPhone so when I get home, I’ll be filling y’all in. It’s been quite a journey and it’s just getting started.
God bless you all 💕

Martie , I am also in California--had my Scoliosis surgery at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital.
I mentioned in my prior comment to you that I had my surgery in 1977; I was 19 years old. Now I am 67. Our situation is similar except I recently had corrective surgery for the area below my prior fusion.
As you move forward, don't hesitate to contact me.

Does getting your life back, free yourself of pain count? I can’t say enough about being able to sleep at night being able to exercise being able to work and being able to stay connected to the world and not going into a wheelchair or being a vegetable. Thank God for my lumbar surgery and my cervical surgery and my hip replacements. All 100% successful!!! I wouldn’t take any of them back. I just would’ve had them sooner if the medical industry would’ve cooperated and not made me go through a bunch of stupid exercises that were never gonna work for 20 years and permanently damage my nerves because of disc compression in my spine. Although the surgeries did get better over the 20 years, I had to wait and I did find my Prince charming surgeons. I’m one happy camper.

@loriesco happy for your successes ! Often, we are given exercises that can damage nerves…so I opted for higher level PT (at NYPresbyterian) and check them all through my osteopath/MD. So far, so good…not 100% pain free, but manageable…

@nycmusic Exercise does not damage nerves. It is something else (like compression or osteophytes) or aging, where the nerve sheaths become compromised. The exercise might aggravate a preexisting nerve condition, is all. Make sense?

@loriesco yes, your words are more precise… though the end result is the same- some exercises can cause problems— been there, done that…what happens is a muscle contracts and down the line, the nerves get pressed and…OW !
