My lungs feel heavy and SOB

Posted by riflemanz64 @riflemanz64, 3 days ago

I was exercising back in August doing a fast 2 mile walk when my lungs felt heavy. I have asthma but it hasn’t bothered me in a while. I’m 70 years old. I had a stress test, heart cath, heart monitor, valve echo and all is normal. I have SOB too. I see a pulmonary doctor in February so I hope they can sort this out. My cardiologist said I have asthma but I couldn’t get in to see the doctor until February. Anyone else have a feeling of heaviness in their lungs? I’ve been to emergency room and I asked the doctor if I needed a breathing treatment and he said no.

@riflemanz64 - in Feb. 2023, I had a mild case of Covid, treated with Paxlovid. A couple weeks later, I embarked on a journey with long Covid which included a return of my previously well controlled asthma. I also developed many heart issues including heart block, necessitating a pacemaker and several episodes of congestive heart failure. After controlling all my heart issues, I’m left with active asthma. Through it all, I’ve experienced chest heaviness along with a feeling of a tight band around my chest. When the heaviness increases, I also experience SOB. PFT, chest X-ray & CT all pretty much normal. My asthma regimen includes Breyna (Symbicort) 2 puffs twice a day, Albuterol inhaler as needed and Montelucast. I’ve recently been prescribed Airsupra inhaler as needed to replace the Albuterol. After 3 years, I still have the tight band feeling but the heaviness has decreased considerably. The only advice I can give right now is to get the asthma under good control and give it time. I’m an 80 year old female and it’s taken this long to feel fairly comfortable.

That’s great that you’re feeling better. I used to be on advair and albuteral. I’m already on montelucast I just need something to open my airways and lose the heaviness.

@riflemanz64 - sounds like you need to get back on a schedule with a maintenance inhaler and also rescue inhaler as needed.

I’m getting a complete PFT done at my February appointment. I felt completely normal until August when doing a fast walk. I was 69 at that time so I guess the downhill slide is beginning.

I’m also 70 and have shortness of breath for about 6 years. For awhile it got better, I had a pulmonary breathing test, showed normal. Symptoms continued, complained of shortness of breath all the time and fatigue. Could walk 4-5 miles, seemed to be no issue. Stairs terrible and walking incline forget it. I was riding a road bike also. Finally had a Chest CT and showed a few things, finally got in to a pulmonologist and ordered another breathing test, this was the 3rd. Said I had asthma. Not liking the inhaler, makes me jittery and then I had a burning in my chest and super fatigued out walking the other day. I also take Atorvastatin. Read that about statins, some agree some don’t. Very frustrating.
