@713j If your kidneys are working well, no physician has ever said you have kidneys that need watching, then they should dump excesses of pretty much any element. So, 400 mg of magnesium should not be a problem, and yes, every day if that works for you. But, you can have hypermagnesemia, meaning too much, and that's why it's important to ensure your kidneys are working properly....first.

Is there any one brand of magnesium, though your fact finding , that is better than any other brands of magnesium? Because some are costly. Or just pick one of the shelf?
