I have had this for years. (Not sure if it was in one eye or both.) I always get it within 24 hours after having msg (monosodium glutamate) which I diligently avoid, but restaurants do not. I never experience pain, but the first time it happened I was performing as a professional musician, and reading the music was tricky!
