Depression and Anxiety at an older age

Posted by pjss48 @pjss48, Sep 14, 2018

I am a 70 year old woman who has had depression and anxiety for a long time. It got worse 3 years ago when my husband lost one of his jobs. I panicked and my anxiety increased. I was afraid to do things. like driving. I have arthritis pretty bad and foot problems. I'm a Christian and my faith has helped me. My husband was a pastor and our church closed 3 months ago. We've had continual stress. Sometimes I don't know what to do with myself during the day. I've gotten help from several doctors, including a psychiatrist. I also have IBS. I am better. I'm taking trazadone duloxetine, remeron and xanax. Also on osteo biflex, probiotic , bentyl and celebrex. I want to get on Sam e but it may interact with one of my meds. Thanks for listening.

You have been through so much, along with your husband, too! It would be easy to fall into a depression! I went through a similar problem, a number of years ago, where, as a lay preacher, our church folded, and it affected me, deeply! Our best friends, were our Pastor and his wife! We just couldn’t financially support the church to keep it open. it was a difficult time, and we felt depressed because we let our parishioners down! We felt that we had failed! We prayed and were supportive of each other, and struggled with trying to keep the church open, but we were not successful! It took some time for me to get over that depressing time in my life! Later on, other opportunities opened up for me, and I continued my ministry in another church! Wishing you the best!

@tryingtogetbetter haven't you found Xanax to be very addicting? My mother was on it and became very addicted. She became very dependent on it. At one point she used to take a little extra .5. She felt that some day she wouldn't wake up because of the Xanax. I would be afraid to use that drug after what she experienced.

@lsittll it is proven that xanax will increase anxiety when taken for long period of time. Then youneed more and the spiraling begins.

@joseph70 Xanax is considered one of the most addictive benzodiazepines due to its fast-acting nature and the significant changes it brings to the brain. Regular use can lead to rapid physical dependence within 2-4 weeks, as the body requires the drug to function normally. Xanax is typically prescribed for short-term use because of its potency and the risk of developing dependence.

Have you tried therapy or joined any online support groups where you can learn new skills to deal with your issues. I like CoDA, Alanon, ACA, and so many more. Pills treat the symptoms, they do not fix the problem.
