Needing a meal replacement drink. Having a hard to keep weight on

Posted by puprluvr @puprluvr, Dec 24, 2025

I’m 6.5 years cancer free from an esophegectomy at Mayo Clinic, but I’m having a difficult time keeping my weight on (114lbs). I am an active person, eat when Im hungry, but not getting in enough calories. Im needing some suggestion's for a meal replacement protein drink or powder that is low sugar, high in calories and good quality. I would appreciate and welcome any and all suggestions.

Congrats on 6.5 years! I am also struggling with maintaining weight. I do like the Ensure Max and Premier Protein brands, but the 160 calories is actually really low so I was advised against them. My husband recently bought me some Kate Farms which are 400+ calories, but I struggle to get them down because they have the taste and consistency (to me) of a loaded product...which they are! But of which I'm not a fan of. He tells me I only need to drink 3-4 a day (and I can barely get down 1/2 of one)! I've also heard recently of the Liquid Hope but haven't yet pursued that. I'll continue to monitor this for others' recommendations too, so thanks for starting this post. Good luck to you!

@cutbet also you can try nourish which has a very flavor. Your doctor can call the company that makes liquid hope and nourish and get some free samples for you liquid. Hope tastes like squash. It has a lot of calories.

Hello again,
Thank you all for your advice about gaining weight with protein drinks in addition to my usual meals. No protein drinks are working for me because of dumping syndrome which is awful. I need to get in touch with a dietician familiar with the challenges of gaining weight after my esophagectomy. I’ll be 7 years cancer free the middle of April 2026. I’m at 113lbs now down 40+ lbs since before surgery, and still can’t maintain or gain weight.I’d be grateful for suggestions about who to contact.

Try Boost Plus. 360 calories. Comes in a couple flavors. Tastes good. Doesn’t trigger dumping (at least not for me).

I may try one more but so far higher calorie drinks don’t work for me. Thanks

I use Kate Farms plant based glucose formula

I can’t do high carbs whether sugar or fake sugar, but thanks.

My sister used twocal HN, she uses it in shakes once her j tube was removed. Has high calories, I think it has 11 gm sugar. Just an idea. Hope you find something that will help.

I am 8 years post-esophagectomy and I am always 2 pounds away from going back on J tube. My body will not tolerate Boost, Kate Farms, etc. so I understand your frustrations and concerns.
I have been using Drink Wholesome egg white protein powder. Company started by a guy who has IBD and all kinds of food sensitivities. There is nothing in the powder that is artificial and I have zero issues digesting it. they make a plain and various flavors. To my great surprise I can tolerate the vanilla which has monk fruit for sweetener. Only one downside to any of their products - pricey. Very pricey. I add it to oatmeal in the morning and then I make a 5pm "drink"with unsweetened almond milk and the protein powder for about 300 calories. Best part is No Dumping. So hope this gives you another option. Been doing this for 2 years now.
