Chronic pain in from osteoarthritis & stenosis

Posted by borwin98 @borwin98, Dec 25, 2025

I'm 96.5 years old and in constant extreme pain. I have chronic pain in my lower back with osteoarthritis, stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. The only thing my Doctor says is to take Tylenol, which has no effect. I've asked for something stronger, but he doesn't believe in pain pills. I have been trying to find another Doctor, but so far no luck. It would be nice to be pain-free for my few final days. Any suggestions?

@jcoleary Early on I requested to have my output increased by 20%. Yes, I felt dizzy and a little "out of it" for a day or so. I would gladly trade a little dizziness for better pain relief. I don't have anything else in my pump. The doc tried adding some kind of anesthetic way back, but it did not sit well with me. When I was at around 1 mg, my pain doc said that I was still at a low dose. I hope your doc will loosen up and let you get some increases.

@heisenberg34 I was still having the dizziness and nausea several days later. I hate nausea and, after 14 years of pain, 12 of those severe, I am somewhat used to the pain, and it is not as bad as it was at its worst.

@borwin98 that sounds wonderful, except the pain. I pray you can find comfort. (invest in a good heating pad! 😉 Blessings. I love my dog he is of such comfort to me, like your kitties!

@loriesco I loved my rescued dog. An American husky, 9 months old, was thrown out because he bit the three-year-old kid he was given to. No three-year-old kid should be handed a young puppy. He lived with me for sixteen years: I still wake up crying for him. I'm too old for another dog; it wouldn't be fair to the dog. I would not like to leave a dog behind.

Oh, geez. Please find another doctor. I have all sorts of issues that cause pain. Find an OD. I have a great one in Charlotte, NC. Injections of cortisone may help. Lidocaine patches may help. SalonPas, my favorite so far. Ice will help with the inflammation. I use a heat pad with a regulator to use to increase the heat level. I love my new Lazyboy. I bought a new mattress, also. Both have helped me so much. My best to you.

@charliesophiedaisyro Oh, yes. Me, too. I have a wonderful cocker spaniel, Rosie, to help me through the pain. Animals enrich our lives in so many ways.

Isn't it sad we get used to the pain that never goes away. I wonder why?

@borwin98 I personally believe that many doctors today are overbooked, often leading to a loss of empathy. They need some sort of course that would teach them how to develop empathy with their patients.

@heisenberg34 time is a problem for docs, but the best ones can be empathetic even in a short time…it’s in the attitude, and making sure there’s a bit of time for questions…writing down your questions is a major help.

@borwin98 yeah, I know that feeling. Maybe get a service dog. And you can leave him to the authorities in your will. I had my best friend for 16 years. Now I have a "new" one who is 12. They adjust! (WE don't!) get a doggie! The pound/shelter has so many good ones!!! OR - just go for a visit and give them some love!

@loriesco I would love to have a dog. I haven't had a dog for three years now. I thought it was cruel to leave a dog behind.
