Best mattress for sacrum pain
I had a failed lumbar fusion April of 2023 and have only sacrificed the pain to sleep in a hospital bed maybe 10 times since then. I have to sleep in a recliner with a cushion with tailbone cutout and another cushion above my fusion and a pregnancy pillow supporting my neck and under my arms. I would give anything to stretch out ! I also have Degenerative Disc Disease, I tried our bed again Saturday laying on my stomach and my sides with no luck. I’m going to see the surgeon Feb 12 to discuss removing the regret of my life stimulator or possibly more tests to find out if something else is wrong. If he has nothing else to offer I’m out of options even the orthopedic doctor at Mayo in Rochester ignored my problems I drove 12 miserable hours to be told never have another surgery of any kind not even for the pinched nerves in my neck( he was in the room less than 10 minutes and never made no suggestions or anything just that I should never have any kind of surgery again ). So if there’s nothing the surgeon will do is there any kind of hospital bed comfortable to sleep on that isn’t solid and I can’t do memory foam. Trying to be prepared for my family doctor to help speed up things. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

What you’re describing screams pressure + misalignment more than “soft vs firm.” You need something that lets your pelvis sink just enough while keeping your lumbar neutral, otherwise your sacrum is taking the hit. Adjustable bases help because you can unload that tailbone by elevating legs and torso. The big trick is spreading pressure, not padding it.
@juliabouton
To anyone interested, my memory foam mattress (mentioned above) is a Sealy, so maybe not Wayfair after all--a gift, so I'm not sure. It's 9 inches deep.

1 ReactionI think you need to consult with a pain doctor.
Check around - maybe there's someone you know who knows someone who's had a back issue/surgery and didn't drive that far!! Be proactive for yourself!! I'd also write a letter of complaint to a heads up person of that hospital. Seems like that surgeon missed/flunked the class re: empathy, caring, thoughtful, and helpful traits that are A MUST if you're in any type of medical field. In one way or another, I'm sure the situation is unlawful!! But #1 would be to go to the hospital 's higher ups & work up the ladder. And... word of mouth is the best advertising!! Ask around. Go on their profile. Go to the social worker at that hospital - may help. Sorry you're going through what you are. Good luck! God bless. Don't give up! That's not the only surgeon!!
@tannerwhitley Thanks I have an adjustable bed still can’t use it
@carculmer I have a very good one him and the physiatrist have been my best Drs both believe in me ! The physiatrist has sent me to several Neutosurfrons because he knows somethings wrong but they all keep saying get a stimulator ! After my fusion he sent me to 3 surgeons Then Mayo Clinic , still unsatisfied I seen a couple more neurosurgeons. Finally fave up and had physiatrist do the stimulator trial and permanent . After being in so much pain for 2 years 4 days after the permanent was placed I forgot because I was 90% pain free and so excited to sleep in bed again and was picking up an air mattress I tried and I moved the wires . 3 months later a neurosurgeon replaced the leads with paddles and I never got any relief from say 1 where I needed it but they cranked it up around the area trying to get it to help . After the stimulator I seen another surgeon and another then went to Mayo again, I’ve been turned away by 9 additional surgeons. Because of the dull ache in my leg when I feel it I can’t put pressure on my leg , leaving church yesterday I got to the bottom step and the leg face my wife and the door helped catch me , then as I stood there holding the door and my canes waiting on her to get the car the other leg done it and I went down on one knee
@smmattocks I did make a complaint but as usual swept away. Even the Surgeons nurse suggested I get a second opinion . Only think I see is the doctors putting me off and him wanting me to get the stimulator bought him enough time so it’s past the 2 years so I can’t sue him
@carculmer I will add to my comment I should have started from the beginning 3 weeks after my fusion someone came behind me setting and twisted my shoulders , it didn’t bother me but I wanted to make sure everything was ok so I saw his assistant week 4 and she gave me bad info. She said it could be a set back but I could start lifting up to 25lb and bending and twisting , so after showering that night I bent to dry my legs and felt the burning in my back I returned a few weeks later to see the surgeon I was in a wheelchair I couldn’t walk to the second floor and he says why you here because if I touch the tailbone the pain goes straight to my testicles that’s when he says No you don’t have that. I tried therapy , to much pain , I tried water therapy when doing pelvic tilts back popped and felt like it’s swelling so they stopped therapy . I had a maintenance program from years ago so I go get in the pool and walk a couple minutes and set in front of the jets for the rest of my body. I figure $3 a visit I get out of the house and have met a few people to chat with. I even tried pelvic therapy twice but couldn’t do the exercises . Strange how non of this is red flags according to them but yet reading on the internet it’s all emergency
@carculmer I have my hardware from my fusion in 2002 you can not move the rod that far over on the top of the screw like it is in the MRI but no one will admit it’s broken
@carculmer I’ve had one he’s the one that sent me for a caudal epidural which didn’t do anything. He wants me to wait until I hopefully get the stimulator out, I see the surgeon the 12th then reevaluate my pain. The last couple weeks the dull ache in my legs getting worse causing me to fall or near falls
