Constipation with continued stomach issues. What to do?

Posted by crazycat3us @crazycat3us, Jan 6 10:43am

After feeling sick and nauseous for 2 weeks I went to me Dr. She did an xray and my system was fully backed up. Three days of magnesium citrate. Two weeks of miralax a few times a day and stool softeners. Now I've been advised to add Metamucil. I have had soft bowel movements, but it doesn't feel enough to clear out. I'm still having stomach discomfort and passing small amounts. I can't get into a GI Dr. Until March. I'm tired of being tired and sick.

If nothing else, for two weeks eat NO FIBER. No fresh fruits or vegetables. No nuts. No Big Mac’s with lettuce, onion bit, whatever. Not even canned fruits and vegetables. No popcorn. If you DO have a blockage or structure somewhere, the fibrous stuff will clump and not pass through. Horrible cramping may result. You are beyond where deliberately taking fiber stool softeners will help.
I am not a doctor. Only personnel experience. Wish you luck.

Be safe! Remember I not doctor. Plus I already had narrowing and it got a little smaller. Just saw my GI 2 days ago for follow up and he’s fine, if it works for me. 🍀

@peterose I had a colon resection 2 years ago after a perforation due to a blockage from colon cancer resection so it’s been a process to figure out what works for my new digestive system. Before all that I could practically set my watch by my morning movement I was so regular, lol. No more though. So I use the senna tea and stool softener every week or so when I feel I need a refresh. I guess I’m pretty paranoid about allowing a build up to happen again and with the tea and softener I feel like I’m starting with a clean slate. I also like to take a probiotic capsule every evening. I know there’s way too much marketing with some crazy probiotic this and that these days but these capsules I think do help my gut biome rebuild after that trauma.

Can you share what you are taking daily?.
Two weeks of miralax a few times a day and stool softeners. Now I've been advised to add Metamucil

we appear to have similar issues / narrow small intestine and resulting constipation and hard stools!

@larust8 thank for update
tumor in small intestine removed /surgeon changed to open surgery during operation after cutting into small bowel........resulting in narrow intestine and chronic constipation .....my own treatment similar to yours and lots of walking-.......I ask for some medication for hard stool which would resolve my issues but doctor appears unable /unwilling to offer something ......so i go the Metamucil /senna route like you do~~

@peterose please be sure to include the stool softener with the senna tea, it will make things much more comfortable. I find fresh fruit and green salad regularly helps too, as well as veggie stir fry with brown rice. Lots of fiber and lots of walking for me too.

I have found a cup of senna tea with 2 of the docusate sodium stool softener taken in the evening straightens out my digestive issues. After colon resection I tend to sluggish bowel movements sometimes. Eating lots of fresh fruit like cantaloupe and strawberries also keeps my stomach happier.

@larust8 and grapes! Which I never ate prior to GI suggesting them as a good travel snack to keep constipation at bay. Successful!

Once a day
MiraLAX is intended to be taken once a day for treating occasional constipation. It is not recommended to take it more than once a day, as doing so can increase the risk of side effects such as diarrhea and bloating. If you need to use MiraLAX for longer than one week, consult a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate course of action.

@peterose

I am curious are you A GI

I have no muscles or nerves in colon. whole system shutdown. I take Miralax twice a day and applesauce with Mineral oil at night. I am under a Rectal and Colons Surgeons care and a GI. If you can not push out the waste more dangerous. Today you must be your own advocate

Check the side effects of your meds. I suffered from stomachaches EVERY day, and some nausea as well. I stopped Ursidiol and the G.I. Issues disappeared by and large.
