Meningioma: Anyone else? I'm frightened

Posted by pixie49247 @pixie49247, May 12, 2023

I just found out I have a Meningioma tumor from a MRI I had for something else. Doctor said they are almost always benign and am going to get an appointment with a neurologist. Anyone else have one of these. I’m getting very frightened now.

@as72: I had a 2.7 centimeter meningioma removed, via surgery (a craniotomy) 2 years ago. Dr. Theodosopoulos stated to me that if the other 2 remaining meningiomas I do have become a problem (they are 6mm & 8mm) I will need to have radiation. And he said that he "runs" the radiation clinic. Am also sending you a private message.

I don’t see private message.

My mother was diagnosed of meningioma early this month. All symptoms are obvious including loss of balance, blur vision etc. Am a Nigerian and the cost of her surgery is 11 thousand dollars, which I do not have to pay in a private hospital. Sadly the government own hospital has been on strike since October 2025. We just rely on dexamethasone that the Nurosurgon recommended. But it isn't doing much as surgery is the best option.

Hi. I was diagnosed with one in 2003. Doctor didn’t think I’d make it through surgery, so he used radiation to eliminate it. All has been well until this year, when we found a second one growing. My new doctor had taken a wait and see attitude. Not happy about it since it is so close to a major blood vessel, but my PCP says this doctor is one of the best, so I am taking his word on this
. Don’t be scared. They are benign and slow growing. Make sure you get regular scans and work with your doctor. Join a support group, they will help see you through this!

@geegeebabe I’m interested to hear more around your radiation experience. My partner is having gamma knife surgery next week for meningioma that’s 2.7 cm. They say she’ll be up and about with maybe some fatigue for a few days after but nothing more than that. Was that your experience?
I’m sorry about your recurrence but it sounds like your surgery was hugely successful.

I, too, would like to hear more comments about radiation. Looks like that’s what I will be going through soon…

@terid
My partner has had a meningioma that the neurologist has been watching for 10 years. It’s has recently started to grow.
At 2.7 cm he said it was time to do something about it. The neurosurgeon recommended surgery and the radiation oncologist suggested radiation. My partner, who is 81, opted for radiation which is happening tomorrow - one big, strong blast. A second neurosurgeon recommended radiation because of my partner’s age. We hopeful. Would love to hear anyone else’s experience with this particular radiation (Gamma Knife Surgery). Meningioma’s are usually benign and tend to grow very slowly, if at all. Wait and see is often recommended.
