Dilated pancreatic duct

Posted by tay2025 @tay2025, 5 days ago

I have had two bouts of pancreatitis most recent being August 31, 2025. I was hospitalized for about a week and came home. They suggested that I do a endoscopic ultrasound which I did and they found that my main duct is dilated to a six. The doctor said he wanted me to come back in three months and redo the test which I did and it is still dilated. He did an biopsy which he said didn’t show anything, but he wanted me to hook up with a surgical oncologist just to loop her in on what was going on have her review my stuff and give a recommendation. She told me that the Schmitz they took out of my pancreas, didn’t have enough stuff in it to really give a very good bad or good result. And the doctor didn’t do any type of marker testing so she wanted to talk to some of her colleagues to see what she wanted me to do next. She calls me yesterday and says that we have three options. One is to watch it. One is to have a second biopsy done. And last is to remove most of my pancreas, my spleen and all of the lymph nodes around there because having a dilated duck in your pancreas can be a cause of cancer so of course I don’t know what to do so I say let’s do a second biopsy and see about the markers and stuff so I’m gonna wait for that but my question is is is this like a preventative measure so that I don’t get pancreatic cancer because that’s kind of what they’re saying and what if you get all that stuff taken out and there isn’t anything then you’re stuck with like issues for not having those organs in your body and I don’t know what to do so I’m just curious if anybody else has been given the option to remove your pancreas, spleen, and lymph nodes or watch your pancreas and what you decided was the right thing to do

I just had an MRI MRCP and my main pancreatic duct is 2.5 cm dilated. There is also a fuzzy spot that looks like it could be a bundle of cysts but they aren’t sure so they want me to do an EUS ASAP. I don’t have any symptoms but I’m in a high risk program monitoring for pancreatic cancer since I’m at risk due to the BRCA2 genetic mutation. I’m already in treatment for two other kinds of cancer. So I’ve been thinking about what I would do if presented with the Whipple surgery option that scares the heck out of me. Quality of life is important. I really feel for you because I’m already feeling the stress of possible findings and having to make a life changing decision. It’s hard. In your situation I would have made the same choice to do another biopsy and maybe even with a different GI since he didn’t obtain a sufficient sample. Does your GI have a ton of experience with EUS? Experience matters. Do you have a biopsy date yet? Sorry you’re going through this. 🙏

Thank you for responding and I am sorry you are going through this also. I’m waiting on my biopsy date. And yes the Dr who does my EUS that’s his deal. Idk why he didn’t do the marker test. But he will this time and then I need to decide watch or remove everything. Hard decisions!

Very hard decisions. I hope they can give you enough information to make the decisions more clear cut.
