Open prostatectomy: How was your healing and recovery?
Next month I am scheduled to have an open prostatectomy. From your experience what has been your experience with healing and recovery? What have you discovered that has been helpful either in preparing for surgery or afterwards that promote healing?

@gerald01 HI Gerald, I should also tell you that my doc saved the nerve bundle that are for stimulating an orgasm. He was also very careful so that I don't have any inconvenience, and never had to this day had to use pads or diapers.Hopefully your doc is as experienced as my doc was. He was one of top docs for prostatectomy. He has done over 11 thousand of them. Just do your homework before you go with your doc. Make sure he has the experience you need. That's how I found Dr. Catalona. He and Dr. Walsh for John's Hopkins are the doctors that came up with the PSA blood test.
@frankn Gerald, I ment incontinence not inconvenience. Oops!

Technically the nerves are there to create the restriction of blood flow required for an erection.
You can have orgasms without an erection (& without the nerve bundle).

Thank you for this information. Very encouraging and much appreciated.
Friends, thanks for your comments. I am 26 days post-open prostatectomy. I am very encouraged by my recovery. So far, I am continent, though there is sometimes a small leakage that I'm learning to control when I laugh unexpectedly or rise. I confess that I had some anxiety before the surgery about an open procedure after reading that "99%" of the posts concern robotic surgery. Those thoughts are allayed. I am grateful for the skill and experience of my Mayo doctor and his team. I am exceedingly grateful.
