Leaky gut?

Posted by nanceedee @nanceedeefeperi, Jan 26, 2018

Hello, I’m hoping to connect with others who may be able to Help with some answers with what I’m dealing with. I have fibromyalgia and am gluten intolerant. I also have eczema that has spread over different parts of my body. My dr prescribed a steroid to help with the eczema, however I am extremely itchy with a rash on arms
Legs torso. Dr thinks it’s all related but I’m not sure
I have had bouts with heart burn s d constipation/diarrhea. I’ve been reading up about leaky gut syndrome and think I have many of
The symptoms. Any tips as to how I can go about this would be appreciated. I’m in the ER now because of severe fatigue feeling faint s d shallow breathing.

@aa2025 can you please tell me what probiotic are.

@rosie60 - Probiotics are the ‘good’ bacteria your gut needs to stay balanced and healthy! They support digestion, nutrient absorption, and regularity. Some people get them from foods like yogurt, kefir, or fermented veggies, and others use supplements for extra support 😊

I can totally relate - I’ve dealt with gut issues for years and learned that supporting the gut lining takes time and consistency. For me, focusing on gentle nutrition, hydration, and adding things like prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and probiotics made a huge difference. I also worked on managing stress and getting daily movement, since that can really affect digestion too. Everyone’s system is unique, but small consistent changes added up for me over time.

Hey! Digestive enzymes can be a big help when your system struggles to break down certain foods. I usually go for a broad blend that covers proteins, fats, and carbs, and some people combine enzymes with probiotics for extra support. I actually use something that’s helped me a lot, but I can’t share the brand here without breaking Mayo’s rules. Hopefully you find something that works well for you 😊

Hi @rosie60, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It is good to see you comment here.

I see @aa2025 has given you a great explanation answering your question asking about probiotics. I thought I’d chime in and provide a couple links that may help.

If you are comfortable, would you describe some about your situation so others have a better idea how to comment? What prompted you to join Mayo Clinic Connect?

I can only speak from my experience. My functional medicine doctor, using traditional lab tests, helped my Sjogerns and osteoporosis more than my rheumatologist did. She used the 4 Rs of gut healing and I am thankful that I chose this path for my healing. I take no prescription drugs, use food and well thought out supplementation to keep my conditions in check. I will always believe that “leaky gut” is real. Science will eventually catch up and prove this. One of my favorite quotes by Hippocrates …
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”

@cpd54 .. who is your functional doctor and their contact info? sounds good. LSM

Hi @gardeningjunkie, I am the moderator for this group. I was actually just welcoming @belinda7 to the group and tagging people with similar experiences. Thank you for your reply though and I will allow @belinda7 to answer your question about how she was diagnosed. 🙂

@amandaa .. is this group still active? It is January 5, 2026 and I am curious about a few things - esp well received books, functional and integrative physicians. I have had a colon resection and have some symptoms of bloating, constipation etc. thank you, LSM

@jlharsh I see this group is still active - wow! it is January 5, 2026. I had a colon resection a year and a quarter ago and am ok but more bloating and constipation that before. My doctor suggested the FODMAP diet which has helped plus magnesium glycinate at night and perhaps Psyllium husk too. I wonder about excellent functional doctors and gut health, plus probably related skin and other issues. Thank you! LSM

@aa2025 . I have some digestive enzymes - do you find taking one before each meal or just meals with meat helps? I hear you can't recommend brands but how you use them would be good. LSM

@lynnes29 - you are welcome to recommend brands that have helped in your own experience with your health. We simply ask members not to sell products here.

What digestive enzymes have helped you? Or do you have them on hand but haven't yet taken them?
