Prolia and its side effects.
Background: I’m a 79 year old female. Hip replacement in 2015; right knee replacement in 2017; left knee replacement in August 2022. I have arthritis in several parts of my body, including both hands.
A recent bone density test showed I have significant bone loss in parts of my body. Wasn’t able to get appointment with endocrinologist for 4 months. GP prescribed Risedronate 35mg taken once a week. Noticed joint and muscle pain became worse. Taking Tylenol for Arthritis to take the edge off.
Appointment with endocrinologist 3 days ago; she strongly recommended I start having Prolia injections. During my appointment she issued a prescription to my drugstore for Prolia to be started the next day.
Once home, I felt I should look for information on Prolia, only checking unbiased websites. What I found, including patients’ stories about their negative experiences, was unsettling. I’ve heard of doctors saying ‘don’t take any notice of Dr Google’, I’ve found that reliable information and supporting data is available on the internet, including that of the Mayo Clinic. Gut feeling and supporting evidence supported my decision not to start Prolia injections.
I would like to know what percentage of those who tolerate Prolia also have arthritis. Conversely, what percentage of those who’ve had adverse reactions to the drug have arthritis.

1 Reaction@pami How do you go about getting on Collagen and does Insurance cover?
Thanks
I use native path Collagen & insurance does NOT cover it.
I've been taking Prolia for almost 6 months. Currently I need a lot of dental work -maybe an extraction. My appointment is in 7 days. I'll need to confer with both dentist and doctor; wondering if anyone else has found themself in this situation.
I do not have arthritis and have had many years of Prolia until I had an unexpected adverse reaction. The pain was unbearable in ankles all the way up one leg. We couldnt find the culprit so as I was first getting better went for six mos shot! Double severe pain in both ankles, legs, hair loss and rash. Now I can barely walk. Nothing seems to take down pain. Swelling seems to be entire foot calves all the way up to femur. Lighting pain at times. Pain 24 hrs a day going on 4th week. I have had many tests. This is not sciatica!
@vic83 At my last visit (Jan 2026) for my Prolia injection, my Dr. informed me that my clinic (Cleveland Clinic) would only be using Jubbonti. The current research seems to say it's OK but the real test will be whether it is as effective. I did well on Prolia with no side effects. Will have to wait and see about Jubbonti.

1 Reaction@badteeth If you need an extraction, have it done by an oral surgeon, who will take extra care to cause less trauma. I have been told that if I need invasive dental work to try and time it in the weeks before the next Prolia injection is due, but ask your doctor the latest on this. I now schedule my six month dental checkups several weeks before the Prolia is due .
@vic83 I had a molar break off leaving nothing but the roots. Periodontist did surgery to remove them requiring bone grafts. That was Feb 26, 2026. I had my Prolia injection 7 days after that. So far, so good. My doc said extractions or surgery would be OK if done at the end of 6 month period of time. Sounds like I need many teeth pulled and at the end of this cycle may have to take a different medication if that has to be done.

I’ve been getting Prolia injections about 5 times now since 2023, every 6 months. My DEXA scores seemed to improve some until the 2025 DEXA Scan. A few months ago I had blisters on my gums and swelling really bad and bleeding if I pressed on the gums. It was so painful, I couldn’t eat solid food.
I had Cancer dx in 2020, already dx with osteoporosis but nothing meds for Osteoporosis because I got a Stem cell transplant. With a SCT a patient can get GVHD (graft versus host disease) which can be a severe rash and other problems like mouth sores. GVHD Mouth sores were ruled out. I saw an Oral Surgeon, got mouth trays (mouthplates) made to hold medication on my gums. The treatment helped and got rid of any mouth sores and gum tenderness. I’m wondering now if they didn’t know or consider that side effects from Prolia might have been the cause. I take extra care of my oral hygiene since having that problem. Now I’m having some discomfort in my gums around my wisdom teeth. I’m sure I need some dental extractions from past root canals but due to my platelets being too low , I can’t have any procedures or surgeries because of severe bleeding. My remedy clove oil +coconut oil. Any suggestions or advice or sympathy (ha ha) would be welcome.

I have had two injections of Prolia. The first one I had flu like symptoms for about two weeks. The second injection had been HORRIBLE! I have had pain in my hips, knees , arms, legs for at least 1 month. Absolutely miserable!!
Saw internist did blood work and everything was within normal limits.
He advised me to NEVER take Prolia again. The aches and pains were unbearable., having to take Tylenol 500 mg 4 x daily to exist.
