Improve bone density and strength without medication?

Posted by plav @plav, Dec 20, 2023

Any luck improving bone density and strength without medication? It seems the medications only mildly help ... and they only help some patients; some studies show the slight improvement in density does not mean quality bone was built. I'm not comfortable with moving forward with the treatments just because "that's what we give patients with osteoporosis". There seems to be no room for education or discussion, or research into actual results or other options.

PEMF s are not FDA approved for osteoporosis yet so probably most doctors will not use it for that purpose.
Looks like it is in clinical trials that will be completed in 2027. In the mean time they are quite expensive to buy for home use and insurance won't cover if not FDA approved.

Thanks for this information.

I have never heard about the bone coach program nor the yoga for osteoporosis by Fishman. Could you please tell me where I could get more information about both. Thanks!

Strontium should not be taken with calcium, but instead away from all calcium.
The current thought is that the body will always choose the calcium over strontium and so you are just basically throwing away the strontium
Most strontium users take their strontium the last thing at night away from all food to avoid this quandry.

Get on your computer and research Algae Cal for bone health. It’s not prescription and it does work to strengthen bones. I am living proof.

I agree with Denise about strontium citrate, because I am living proof also. I just got my Dexa report back with the added TBS report for bone quality , good normal bone density with normal TBS or bone quality.
I do not take algae cal, but I have taken strontium citrate for over 20 years. You may find strontium citrate at a good price point on many sites. Over 20 years of use with no side effects and no fractures.

I’m 55 and found out I had osteoporosis in October. Don’t want to do meds. Too many side effects. Have you heard of the Onero program? I’m just beginning to look into it.

@kathleen1314 why did you start taking strontium citrate 20years ago? Have your DEXAs always been normal?

no, I had a dexa that indicated osteoporosis in my femoral bone. .... -2.8
I tried Boniva and there were no changes in my dexa. I had side effects from the Boniva which I did not choose to endure. I researched and began BHRT and strontium citrate.
I did not tell my endocrinologist that I had stopped the Boniva but begun the strontium citrate.
My next dexa showed my first postive change; my endocrinologist almost skipped into the room. Then I told him what I had done. He sat down did some researching on his computer and called a specialist.
He then told me to continue on and let us see how the next dexas looked. Every dexa was an improvement, eventually he told me that I did not need him any more, but to "change nothing" and be sure to take plenty of calcium in addition to my strontium citrate.
That was years ago.
I am now in "normal" bone territory in that femoral bone area, and normal bone microarchitecture, quality according to the TBS.
A friend of mine who also had side effects from pharma meds and began strontium citrate says that we won the bone lottery.
I believe that she is correct.
She had been fracturing and stopped fracturing after beginning strontium citrate; I am not sure that that is a reaction that everyone who is fracturing will have. Indeed the research is more in the 49% area of reduced fractures for strontium users, but the strontium worked for her.

Which brand do you use? Thanks

Right now I am using Vitacost and sometimes AOR. Strontium was in short supply during Covid so I bought several bottles, and am working thru my supply.

Do you believe strontium without BHRT would still work for you, or do you need both. I have stayed away from strontium because I had read that it affected the dexa readings due to its structure, giving a false sense of improvement. However, your story of improvement without fracture all those years tells a different story. Do you also take the usual D, Calcium, K etc…. Is there any risk to BHRT? Thanks
