Chronic pain in from osteoarthritis & stenosis

Posted by borwin98 @borwin98, Dec 25, 2025

I'm 96.5 years old and in constant extreme pain. I have chronic pain in my lower back with osteoarthritis, stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. The only thing my Doctor says is to take Tylenol, which has no effect. I've asked for something stronger, but he doesn't believe in pain pills. I have been trying to find another Doctor, but so far no luck. It would be nice to be pain-free for my few final days. Any suggestions?

@charliesophiedaisyro I find an electric blanket helps; the only trouble is, I never want to get out of bed. There's less pain when under the blanket, with two cats purring loudly beside me.

@borwin98 Yes, or a heating pad. Also, OTC lidocaine patches and Thermacare patches. I also sleep with wrist guards. Hubbie jokes that in the AM, our bed looks like a sad, sad burlesque took place as I inevitably take things off in the night. Add in the white cotton gloves for my hands (under the wrist guards if you please) and you've got a real show LOL.

@sue4 That's another concern I have: how much stress am I causing my son, since I live with him? He's 56, and men tend to drop de ad when under stress.
Can I get these gummies at a regular shop? I'm in Toronto, Canada, so we probably sell different items.
Maybe I could sneak some gummies across the border. I don't want to end up in jail for doing that.

@borwin98 Well I tried dropping dead (like my father) in my 50's but had double bypass and it's working great in my 70's. Sorry but I know nothing about cannibis laws except in my New Jersey area. Just search where to buy gummies in your area. I'm sure you'll find some help online. I have bought prescriptions from Canadien pharmacies and found great deals in your fine country. If you buy some, please give some info on what and how much they cost. Happy New Year, John

Sorry for your pain and hope you get some relief…speaking only for myself, instead of seeking the end of all pain, I focus on what I want to be able to do and what might get me there. In short, I have mostly manageable pain, sometimes just discomfort, and I can do the most important things I need to do. Not perfect, but doable for me.. i get help from osteopath/MD, PT, heating pad for rests, and carefully used Tylenol (have had CRC, so that’s the option I have). May 2026 be less painful for all !

@wisco50 Thank you so much. It's so nice to have your competent advice, especially about getting addicted at 96 years of age. Ha, ha, who cares, all I want is a pain-free old age, but I guess that's too much to ask for, at least from my doctor. I am, however, on a hunt for a more compassionate one. Thank you, and hugs for reaching out.

Hugs and best wishes! I called to refill my pain med on NY Eve day and found out that the MD office may have screwed up because the prescription was supposed to be ready and was not! I did have enough pain meds but with the clinic closed today (NYD) and not sure about Friday…argh!

@wisco50 Don't let this happen again. Always have at least a week's supply on hand for insurance. I make sure I never run out by managing to store extras, even by going without on the odd day when there may be less pain. I also beg and borrow the odd pill here and there from friends. Hug your dog or cat on extra bad days. I pray you get your meds soon. Hugs

I can refill online through CVS. Can't speak for every item, but you can almost always refill a Rx 3 days before it runs out. They contact the doctor for refill authorization. Around holidays maybe call or message your doctor's office. You could ask if they could authorize a substitute physician to approve refills in their absence.

Also if they know you your pharmacist could give you an advance on your nex refill.

My doctor put me on hydrocodone and it helps a lot. Had to find a doctor who would prescribe it for me. He’s great.

@cutshaw01 Good for you. I'm trying to find a doctor who will give it to me, but so far, I've had no luck. It's the only thing that helps. I think it's harder to get help in Canada.

@borwin98 Are you in the U.S.A.? Canada is very tough to get any help.
