Post Exertional Malaise

Posted by bettyjackson @bettyjackson, 6 days ago

I have always been the family "Energizer Bunny". But this was my last family gathering I can host.
5yrs of fighting long covid, since Spring 2020. Always determined I could be regular self by grit. Christmas Day I couldn't even get dressed. I didn't care if PrimeRib got cooked or not.(Which I can't smell or taste anyway) I've jumped into almost every suggested idea on this site..... supplements, etc., Skeptical relatives still don't understand. I was @ Mayo LongCovid clinic 4yrs ago, my Primary Doc is sympathetic, but Standard_Of-Care simply doesn't work for this weirdo viral invasion. Only coping strategies offered.
The whole world, millions of people , affected, but still no cures???!!!

Hello, Vostie and Everyone Else -
I, too have had LC for 5 years. I'm 83 years of age and caught Covid in Oct. of 2020.
Six weeks after Covid, I experienced my first bout of PEM and of course it has been a roller-coaster ride with it ever since.
However, I do want to share that I learned many things about the damange to our bodies and some of my solutions are: Amino Acids to help repair my mitochondria. Luteolin + Rutin to help mitigate the Mast Cell Activation. And, the practice of twice-daily Yoga Nidra sessions with (free) Ally Boothroyd on YouTube. You won't believe how Y.N. will help restore energy.
For a lot of information, I encourge you to visit the YouTube channels of "Broken Battery" and also the Bateman Horne Center AND, last but not least, Gez Medinger who is 'one of us'. (All sites are free)
My best to Everyone,
Pam

@mspaminreno hi!
You say you take Amino acids.
Is that a pill or are just saying you
Are eating a lot of protein rich food. Where do you get Luteolin and Rutin, and what are they?
I’m completely ignorant on all this stuff and my NP isn’t too swift.
I’m seeing a Infectious disease doc that has put me on a regimen to avoid Bladder infections, since I took so many antibiotics for a period of yrs, my body can no longer stand them, and he tells me if I get a particular bacteria again,
I will have to have an infusion twice a day for 3 days in hospital.
So ofcourse I will mention having
This LC now, and maybe he can help. I appreciate all of you responding to my problem.

Thank you so much for this post. I have had Covid x 2 over the past 5 years. The medical system doesn't seem to be able to help. I have little energy and lately almost none. It is an effort to get up in the morning and to do anything is overwhelming. I just want to sit or sleep. I have COPD from Covid and am on inhalers as well. Remain short of breath on any exertion. Medical profession state they can't do anything more for me. My husband has to do just about everything around the house. I am 76 and use to be a bundle of energy before all this happened. I can no longer entertain, go to church, or see my friends. I feel depressed and useless. Thank you for the information provided. Maybe I can find something useful to grant me some quality of life.

Ah, ha! I found you again. I saw you on my smart phone but had to search over here on this newsletter to find you again.
Yes, the Amino Acids I take are supplements. Because I learned that our mitochondria has been damaged, I started by looking for a product to support this condition. I found products by Life Extension and looked at the ingredients and decided to start taking them separately. I buy all my products from iHerb.com. They are affordable and they ship fast with free shipping avilable at $30.00.
Sadly, it's a process...and it takes time. One nice thing that comes to mind is that Amino Acids are taken up by the body quickly. And, I feel the positive affects quite soon.
The sad thing about PEM is that something we did yesterday, can bring on a bout today. Resting so important.
My 'energy attacks' come on me when I've looked at social media on my cell phone as well as when I've done a little too much of something physical. It's maddening.
Please take a few minutes and go to the (free) YouTube channels of: 1) Broken Battery and 2) Bateman Horne Center and 3) Gez Medinger. You will learn A LOT. And, you won't feel quite so alone.
To help with restoring energy, consider Yoga Nida sessions. No...it's not physical as you will see. Again...here's a free YouTube Channel and I use it twice a day: Ally Boothroyd. You will be amazed.
I hope this helps get you started.
Hugs,
Pam

Yes, I'm very conscious of amount of protein I ingest daily. I've taken to eating (either) meat or meatless breakfast patties to start my day together with a piece of toast and half an apple.
I purchase my Luteolin+Rutin at iHerb.com where they have a terrific selection of products, including groceries when needed.
My best,
Pam

Happy New Year to you, too. Now, if I could just solve my GI issues!! 🙂

I thought to throw my 2-cents in regarding GI issues. I use "Chewable Papaya Enzymes" by NOW before breakfast in the morning and again later in the day if I feel like I might need to.
Also, I take "Triple Magnesium Complex" by Swanson 3 days a week, or more if necessary.
My best,
Pam

Thank you so much for advice of products and what you are doing and how it is affecting you. This will utterly ridiculous to you.
I’m 91 yrs old. And I was given this I pad. So I’m brand new at it , and not too great on it, but am learning googlingand my kids don’t want me to order anything on line. So if I need something, I’ve been asking them to order things for me, and then I pay them back.
They both live 2 plus hrs away from me. I am new to using an I pad, I don’t have a Smart ph.so I will ask them if one or the other will order for me. I appreciate your advice so much, I’d like to give you two hugs.! Excuse me if I make a lot of typos., learning at 90 yrs old , “ new Fangled ways” of doing stuff is not easy. And my brain isn’t on all cylinders these days.

@jimthescientist Thank you. I will try. I have been eating cauliflower pasta. My gut won't even tolerate fast food at all. What about boiled eggs? Sprouted grains, like Ezekiel bread? Are beans the only protein you use? I would love to hear more of the diet if you don't mind?

Jump to this post

No, More than beans. After several months of trial and error (because the whey protein created GI issues) I found VEGA Protein + Greens, 20 g Creamy Vanilla. This has a pea protein base, similar to the AGT foods Veggipasta rotoni. Two meals a day: Prepare my Gluten free Farmers We Know Rolled Oats for the day. Bring 4 cups water to boil, add 2 cups rolled oats and cook for 8 minutes. This creates 4 cups of cooked rolled oats. Opinion: If you want the soluable fiber you don't need to rinse this much. I don't want the soluable fiber so I rinse it was a lot of hot water. That's up to you. The meal: 5 oz of cooked rolled oats, one Dannon light & Fit Greek Blueberry Yougart, one cup, 140 g organic frozen blueberries (thaw for 60 sec in microwave), liquify with Califa Farms organic oat milk. This is 8 oz of food, 40 g of protein and 10 g of fiber. Your system may not be able to handle this much at once, so this could actually be two meals. Check with your doctors first. I have been eating this everyday for 4 years now. Boring? Yes! But I feel that these changes have helped me get back to my pre COVID life.

Oh, gosh...I know how you feel. I, too, was very active; snowshoed and hiked all over the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains; took photographs, painted watercolors, attended Craft Shows and Art Exhibits; entertained friends in my small condominium, etc. I'm 83 years of age and 5 years post covid. I 'manage' my symptoms, including PEM by taking a lot of supplements and participate in (non-physical) YogaNidra sessions, 2 x day. Believe it or not, these provide my body with some energy and strength. I highly recommend the free YouTube channel of Ally Boothroyd.
Yes...I have to 'rest' 2; sometimes 3; times per day...making it difficult to get anything done. So, as you can see, you are not alone. There are millions of us. I think it helps to be in touch with one another.
For more information about 'our' condition, please visit the YouTube Channels of: Gez Medinger (he's one of us) - go back to one of his first videos when he described PEM and visit Broken Battery and the Bateman Horne Center.
My best to you,
Pam

Hello, Betty Jackson and Everyone else,
I know exactly how you feel - Post Exertional Malaise is THE WORST and what a rediculous 'name' for such a debilitating conditon!
As I've said...I'm 83 years of age and 5 years post covid. I experienced my first bout of PEM approximately 6 weeks after contracting Covid in Oct. of 2020. I'm managing my symptoms holistically. I take A LOT of supplements - mostly Amino Acids to help repair my damanged mitochondria. I also participate in (free) twice-daily YogaNidra sessions with Ally Boothroyd on YouTube. You will be amazed how these help provide energy as is managed by our nervous system.
Oh, there is so much I can share and I want to but I am experiencing a bit of a PEM crash at the moment.
However, I encourage you to visit these free YouTube Channels for A LOT of helpful information. Broken Battery. Bateman Horne Center. Gez Medinger (he is one of us). The Y.T. channels of Healing Gems and Raelan Agle are very helpful and informative.
My best to you,
Pam

@mspaminreno Thank you for all of the YT information. I am 70 years old and I've been suffering for nearly two years and none of the supplements I've tried have helped. I keep searching for more information and these YT channels are a great place to continue my search. Be blessed and be healed! ❤
