This and That and Talk - My Transplant

Posted by Rosemary, Volunteer Mentor @rosemarya, Apr 9, 2017

As our Mayo Connect community grows, I am constantly meeting organ transplant members on a wide variety of forums with a wide range of issues that are not directly transplant specific. However, because we are all transplant recipients, we have a special connection: a unique journey and best of all - a new life! We don't always need help or advice. Many times we just want to chat with someone like us! That is my purpose in starting This and That and Talk.

Drop in and say 'Hi'. You are welcome anytime.

What do you want t to talk about? What words can you offer to someone who is on the journey? Do you have any questions for another recipient?

@rosemarya @hopeful33250 I don't think I did ask them, I just called and asked about medications I could and not take if it was a fungus. They told me that but did not mention any possibility of it being weakened nails from the medications. I want to ask them about using lamosil also, so I will call or ask on the portal about those two things.
This is never an issue I would have thought I would be discussing on this forum but I probably brought it up wondering if anyone else had a problem from the typical immunosuppressants. Thanks for the feedback to all. I guess I will ask but then if they are not sure I will continue with the treatment. I have already paid for it up front.
The bigger issue now is despite my drinking massive amounts of water my creatinine continues to go up. On Monday it was up to 1.78. I am sure I will be getting a call from MGH tomorrow. They cannot possibly want me to drink even more water -- I am close to 100 oz a day now! I find the days I go to the pool the easiest to get all of that water in. I do one of my 3.5 cup water bottles while in the water, refill it and do a second and then drink more in the evening to finish off the large requirement -- glug...glug...glug.

@rosemarya - Thanks for the encouragement. I never looked at it from that vantage point. And...I shared about my health issues on Monday (topic was prayer so it was natural, on topic, and not intentional/planned) and the next day one of the women offered to be tested to be a living donor for me! That is an answer to prayer and brings my list of potential donors to 3!!!

@contentandwell - What is MAC and HE?

What is the reason for your high creatinine? Are they doing anything about it? Mine is 2.42 so I'm concerned for you. I don't want to worry you but obviously you are not pleased either.

@contentandwell - I think I understand what was going on and I guess it is good that the confusion episodes were from the cirrhosis and not yet another medical issue.

My husband has just been diagnosed with liver disease in the last month, I am desperately trying to avoid a transplant through health and unfortunately the medication we have to take due to all of the symptoms and effects. Can someone please help me understand the day to day struggles like uncontrollable nausea. At this point he can't even take all the medications correctly because he hasn't been able to eat for almost a week. Nausea meds seem to maybe help a little but not enough to get the nutrition that is necessary.

@lexiopo - I'm just catching up on emails. I'm so sorry to hear of all the near misses you have had lately! I can't imagine the stress you are under and the fatigue you must be experiencing. I can hardly judge your husband for his actions when I'm overweight which will make my transplant and recovery harder. We all have some patterns of behavior that are less than ideal. I'm also supposed to avoid caffeine (it makes the cysts on my kidneys grow faster) but I take sips of my husband's about once week.

Have you made contact with the transplant team yet? Does your husband have some support, other than you, to stop drinking? Perhaps a sponsor from AA? You can't bear all that burden yourself and someone who has walked in his shoes might be able to give both of you the support you need.

Hi Lexiopo,
I too am in a similar situation. I returned from Mayo ER on Monday after a 3-day stint in ER and two week of classes for my transplant. I am now waiting for a phone call to see if I make it to the list. I have a MELD score of 24. Good luck to you and your husband!

@lcamino, The timing of your message was perfect. I received/read it before I got out of my car. I was going to visit a woman whose son is going thru kidney transplant evaluation next month. I shared your message. She said it gave her chills; we hugged for a short while. She hopes that one of his siblings will be his match. Thank you for sharing because it gave her hope and reassurance.

People have surgery after transplant. People have babies after transplant, too.
And, yes, transplant team will follow you closely both before and after surgery. The whole transplant process is like a finely choreographed ballet performance....and there is not a detail that is overlooked or left to chance.

I was deferred - they claim I can't afford the meds after. 🙁

@contentandwell - So they think the med is causing the high creatinine?
