Hysteroscopy scheduled at Mayo in 4 wks. On Zepbound for weight

Posted by sak2 @sak2, Dec 12, 2025

I'm 61 and postmenopausal. I have recently been having intermittent lower abdominal pain and intermittent discharge that is sometimes brown, but last night was light pink. Transvaginal ultrasound was done mid-Nov., and shows:
Endometrial Thickness: 7 mm
Cervix: Fluid visualized within the cervical canal. There is a complex structure with fluid fluid level in the region of cervix measuring 3 cm x 2.4 cm x 3 cm.
I have a hysteroscopy scheduled at Mayo, which is 8 hours away, so I want to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.
I am on Zepbound, so I called to ask whether I need to stop it prior to my visit. I was told I would not be under anesthesia for the procedure, but I have read that sometimes people are. I also want to be prepared if they need to put me under while I am there. How long do results take at Mayo? Does anyone out there have advice for me?

@sak2 I'd like to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect and to the Gynecological Cancers Support Group. You will find us to be a great group who share our own personal experiences while we support one another.

You are wise to go to Mayo for this hysteroscopy. You will receive compassionate and excellent care and you'll receive your results quickly, often within the same day. I suggest that when you go to Mayo that you plan to stay for an additional day or so to not only get your results but also anticipate that Mayo could add additional appointments.

I've been a patient at Mayo in Rochester, MN since 2019. My hysteroscopy was done along with a D & C so I was under light anesthesia. Mine was performed at my local hospital. Since my biopsy from the D&C showed endometroid adenocarcinoma (endometrial cancer) I was referred to Mayo Clinic. I've continued at Mayo Clinic since my first procedure and my care has been excellent.

In your place I'd go with what you've been told about continuing to take your prescribed medication.

When is your procedure scheduled? Which campus will you go to - Minnesota, Florida or Arizona?

I'm going to Rochester on January 12. I love Mayo and had a partial thyroidectomy in 2022 there. Thanks to Mayo, I don't need to take thyroid meds.

I think, just in case, I'm going to stop zepbound 10 days prior. I would hate to have situation where they could have done something while I'm there, but can't because of the Zepbound. I'm very nervous about what could be going on. I know Mayo is test best place to be and that gives me piece of mind.

Thank you so much for your reply, and I hope you're doing well.

@sak2 Thank you for your good wishes and for the date when you will be in Rochester. I don't know much about Zepbound but you might like to check in with your prescribing physician to make sure it's OK to stop the meds prior to your Mayo visit. I'm with you. Despite the distance I'm grateful to be a Mayo patient.

If you haven't been to Mayo in Rochester in a few years then you might like to review the updates on downtown construction. The construction creates huge tie-ups in traffic although there are ample detour signs. We just got back earlier this week and we stay downtown. Two mornings I took the hotel shuttle because it was cold and icy and our walking route has changed because of construction.

Here is the Mayo link where you can check for updates on construction:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/rochester-construction
The day before each appointment I received a text giving me updates on where to park. While we didn't need that information I found it helpful.

Will you please let me know the outcome of your appointment at Mayo on January 12?

Helen, you say that you had "light anesthesia" for D&C hysteroscopy. Can you tell me the name if the anesthesia you were given? Was it propofol? Cheryl

@cherylfromknoxvillet I'm going to have to do some digging because my patient portal records at my local hospital do not show the type of anesthesia. All I can find is "general anesthesia" which isn't helpful.

I have an appointment with my primary care physician this week and I'll ask what she has in her records for me.

@naturegirl5 Thank you so much for the heads up.

Helen, do you know whether they put a tube down your throat (general anesthesia), or did you have an IV (likely, propofol, like they use for colonoscopies)? It's a lot easier to wake up from propofol, and it's less risky.

Also, can you find out whether an anesthesiologist (an M.D.) or a nurse anesthetist (a nurse practitioner, also called a CRNA, NOT an M.D.) administered your anesthesia?

Sincere thanks for any answers that you can provide! Cheryl

"I'm going to stop zepbound 10 days prior."
Please check with your doctor, to find out if it would be out of your system in 10 days or it could better to:
1. taper off the zepbound
2. it may not be necessary to taper of at all.
Please get facts and information by contacting your doctor.

I had an IV. I'm thinking it was likely propofol. The anesthesia was administered by a nurse anesthetist and I remember that clearly as the billing was for the CRNA and for the MD who was not present at all. I questioned this billing at the time and was dismayed and irritated that the local hospital billed under the same procedure code for two medical providers. Their explanation was inadequate as was the explanation from BC/BS.

@sak2, did you find out from your care team at Mayo Clinic about whether or not Zepbound can be continued prior to your visit?
