RA, Rhinitis and dry eyes. Rhinitis help!

Posted by rar64 @rar64, Dec 21, 2025

I have RA, dry eyes and Rhinitis. The rhinitis is 24/7. I've tried the sprays you can use like a netty pot. I use Ipantropium Bromide too.
I have tissues all over my house, cars, pockets etc. Nothing works. I'm seeing an ENT next week. I don't know what he will suggest.
Does anyone here have any suggestions?? I'd love to hear.

rar64, I use pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. It's OTC but they keep it behind the pharmacy counter and you need to show a driver's license to buy it. Makes it easy to find, anyway. I buy the four hour tabs( the little red ones) and only take one though two are recommended. It is a non-drowsy formulation that makes too twomuch energy for me.
If you have cardiac issues ask the pharmacist. I think it can cause arrythmias in the vulnerable.
It drys your sinuses, but won't cure any underlying cause. You may have a bacterial, or fungal infection so keep your md appointment even if pseudoephedrine works magically for you.

Be careful with pseudophedrine. It can also cause high BP and trigger arrythmias. People with a history of arrythmia should never take it.
My daughter took one shortly before a Doctor's appointment and her BP was stroke level.

@rar64, I don't have RA but do occasionally have dry eyes and I have chronic rhinitis. About 3 years ago when i was having a lot of trouble breathing through my nose and it would sometimes have some dripping. I saw a Rochester Mayo Clinic ENT doctor because I was wondering if something could be done with my deviated septum to help the breathing. After listening to the doctor explain what my options were we decided to go with a proprietary nasal spray through the Mayo Clinic pharmacy. The 3 ingredients are Mometasone to reduce inflammation, Ipratropium to reduce nasal drainage and Diphenhydramine which is an antihistamine to help reduce nasal drainage. The product description on my prescription is MOMET 0.033% – IPRA 0.02% – DIPH 0.02%. The doctor had me use a saline nasal rinse twice daily, morning and evening. After the nasal rinse I would use 2 sprays in each nostril. I was amazed at how well it worked for me. I only used the proprietary nasal spray for about 4 months but I still do a twice daily (morning and evening) saline nasal rinse. I still use a lot of tissues around the house but I can breathe much better.

Thank you, John. I'm seeing an ENT tomorrow. I'll definitely mention this to him.

I have RA and dry eye issues. For the dry eyes I have been on Restasis for years. My nasal issues were opposite of dry. I called it old lady runny nose. My ENT initially gave me the itrapropium spray which immediately dried up my runny nose but made my eyes a lot worse. He didn't realize I had that issue, but he did say that it's known to cause a worsening of dry eyes. I stopped it and he did a procedure where he burned the nerves in the sinuses causing the runny nose and it worked. You've got to work with an ophthalmologist about your eyes. Any antihistamines will cause more eye symptoms. Good luck

Ouch, he burned the nerves. That sounds painful. I take ipratopium to. I didn't realize it dried my eyes more. Ugh.
I'm seeing an ENT tomorrow. I will certainly mention everyone's comments. Thank you so much.
