Scared to start pharmacological therapy for severe osteoporosis
I'm new to the group and just found out I have severe osteoporosis, (T score is -4.5). I'm young, only 57yrs and the Dr. is recommending I start on Forteo or Evenity. I know I have to do something since my bones are so awful, but the side effects of all these drugs are so scary. Some folks are telling me not to go on pharmaceuticals but seek out nutraceuticals and lifestyle changes. Anyone else in this same place or have had good outcomes with either of these drugs? Thank you in advance!

@cperlin I'm trying to find a good one in Oklahoma. My physical therapist is also recommending PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy which I'm starting after Christmas. It's already been expensive with Western medicine, but I think a functional med doctor would be very beneficial, but I know it's very expensive also.
I fortunately have not had any side effects. When I first started I was hyper focused on what might show up. When I decided I was going to trust the process and put that effort into being positive it was doing its job, it’s just a thing I do daily and it’s building strong bones for me. Hope you find what works for you! K

2 Reactions@br03 Most functional medicine doctors don't accept insurance because they spend a lot of time with patients and insurance won't reimburse. If you can manage it, it's worth the investment. Also, here's a PEMF device I use myself and recommend: https://www.paintreatmentdirectory.com/products/resona-health-vibe. It's inexpensive, easy to use and has many protocols for different problems, including pain, anxiety, sleep, etc. It's not as powerful as a clinical device you might find in a PT office, but it's more than made up for by the fact that you can use it at home every day.

2 ReactionsThis has renewed my interest in HRT despite the risks. I’m scheduled for my first bone density test next month. Does it matter what type I get? Does everyone get osteoporosis?

1 Reactioncelia16, over half the postmenopausal women in the US have osteopenia. About 40% over 70 have osteoporosis.
All the rest have either been treated (with Forteo) or remain untested, I jest.
With all the other testing that we endure, I wonder that we aren't tested at 50 and 55. Many guidelines still recommend testing at 65 after most of us have been losing estrogen for 15 years. It is so much easier to prevent the loss than to regain what is already lost, which is difficult for even estradiol to achieve.
The only thing more frightening that the pharmaceuticals is fractures that bend us.
I can't answer to the best HRT, but hope that many wise experienced estrogen-happy readers like Mayblin will respond.

1 ReactionI'm 59 with severe osteoporosis. I'm otherwise quite healthy. I only got a DEXA scan because I lost height rather quickly in 2 years. The results were a shock to me! I'm scared of the drugs but even ore scared of fracturing my spine and ending up with chronic pain and an inability to continue my active lifestyle. I'm going on Foteo and hoping for the best. I don't want Evenity since it comes with the risk of vertabrae fractures if you stop it without a powerful anti-reabsorbative to follow it up. With Forteo you can lose gains without an anti-reabsorbative to follow it up, but the rebound isn't as drastic. Best of luck to you and your decision.
