Neuropathy + Proton-pump Inhibitor use?? Anyone had this experience?

Posted by piross1528 @piross1528, Sep 11, 2021

Hello there,

I am experiencing symptoms of SFN and am wondering if anyone has ever made this connection, had this experience, or heard of such a thing. I am looking for the cause of my neuropathy and the only med I currently take is Prilosec and have been daily for about 2 years. However, my serum B12 levels are high. I have recently discontinued the PPI and am really hoping the symptoms resolve as this has a been a difficult time for me emotionally and physically. Has anyone here ever had a neuropathy they believed to be linked to PPI use? Thank you! Steve P

Really informative thread. Started taking Protonix two years ago. A few weeks ago, the soles of my feet started burning, mainly after walking, but also when driving or cycling. Doc ran blood tests and didn't find anything, have appt with neurologist in a couple months. After reading this, I started a taper. I asked the doctor how and he told me to cut the pills in half (I know this isn't usually recommended, but it's working out okay.) I still take the fraction of a pill daily after two weeks. I've read a few articles on how to taper, and some say the process can take up to three months. Other methods suggest skipping a dose every third day, and after a couple weeks, every other day.

No matter how it's done, it's hard. The first time I tried this, my nausea returned so bad the doc told me to stay on. This time not too bad nausea, but occasional bouts of reflux. I'm taking the usual OTC stuff when needed. Not fun but tolerable. The side effect I'm most afraid of is dementia. Of course, the osteoporosis is also concerning, and now PN??? I appreciate all of the info you have shared.
