Cost of stem cell therapy at Mayo
I am having stem cell therapy on my left knee tomorrow. I did not realize Mayo was doing this already. For those of you who have had this done at Mayo, what was the cost? If you wanted to be part of the research, how do you get into that?

I would not say it was painless. The injections were a bit painful, especially in my knee which was already quite swollen. I have continued to have swelling and some soreness in the knee. The shoulder is fine but the tendinitis in the arm is still painful. Guess the stem cells don't do anything for that since it is not in the joint where they were placed. If it works for you, stem cell is best way to go in my opinion. If it does not work, you always can go for one of the other options.
Has anyone had stem cell for hips, if so is osteoporosis a drawback
My fat out of belly, was for breast reconstruction after lumpectomy.
I'd Love to sign up for a stem cell therapy if Mayo is working on this. I'm a type 2 Diabetic (13 years going strong) just recently afflicted with Gastroparesis. Who do i need to contact for seeing if i'm a candidate?
YES, I'D LOVE TO HEAR THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF AVAILABILITY OF STEM CELL THERAPY. MY CURRENT KNOWLEDGE HOLDS THAT THIS THERAPY IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN EUROPEAN CLINICS. PROFESSIONAL ANSWER PLEASE?
@jeannegordon4 I believe SCT is available at several US sites, including Mayo-MN and other top clinics.
DEAR OLDKARL, THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH about availability of Stem Cell Therapy. I'm in my late seventies and certainly old enough to benefit to some degree.
Anyone know if stem cell therapy can be used to treat degenerative arthritis in ankles? My doc does not think a total ankle replacement would work and there is too much instability for ankle fusion. Interested in other options.
I have osteoarthritis in both hips. I’m 61. I met with a Sports Medicine doctor at Mayo in Scottsdale AZ on 1/23/2018 and he said one of the other Drs there does SCT on the knees and hips. His name is Dr Bryan Ganter. It is not covered by insurance. However, they also do Viscosupplimentation Therapy. It might be covered by insurance depending on your coverage. I’d rather go with one of these routes rather than Total Hip Replacement.
@jeannegordon4, If you are seeking more information on stem cell therapies available at Mayo Clinic, or just more information about the treatment in general, here is some information that may help you:
Regenerative Medicine Consult Service Process
Transplant Call-in Center
844-276-2003
What to expect when you call the number:
– An employee will answer and ask the nature of why you are calling
– Say you are interested to stem cells for osteoarthritis or whichever joint ails you
– The employee will funnel your call to the appropriate coordinators from there
– For joint issues, you will be transferred to PMR (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)
Appointment coordinators will ask more specific questions (inclusion and exclusion criteria)
If you meet the criteria:
– You will be asked to send in your records and a doctor will look at it in a case-by-case basis
Important Notes to be Aware of:
– PMR is a busy practice, so wait times may exist but answers will be given
– If a treatment exists in the clinic for a diagnosis (i.e. Leukemia) stem cells are not offered
– Price is out of pocket
Types of stem cell treatments offered are Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) injections and Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections. You can find more specific information on these types of injections here, http://mayocl.in/2AUIoAn.
