Nocturnal Leg Cramps - Help!

Posted by ashby1947 @ashby1947, Oct 20, 2019

Does anyone have a suggestion to help deal with foot/ankle/leg cramps in the middle of the night? I take plenty of calcium and magnesium and am thinking that I need to increase my potassium intake. Topical lotions (Theraworx, Tiger Balm, etc.) have not helped. I hope this is a good day for whoever is reading this! Sue

I dont kno if u are male or female or if it matters. I took mag glycinate for a couple of wks, but had bad bowel issues from them. I wasnt constipated which was a good thing, but the other way isnt good 🙁 What did u mean that u will double the mag per maribarry? this is a reply to @gently

hi, itspg1.
I was referring back to another answer | @maribarry | Aug 24 magnesium glycinate capsules have done the job for me! I buy them at Costco and take 2 as directed on the bottle each evening before bedtime. i apologize for not making that clear which would have been easy. I'd been taking half dosages, without complete success. I've only had one cramp since taking maribarry's advice. And it was my toe in the daytime.
I'm female (probably only matters to my current flame). I think most physical things are a bit different for men than they are for women, probably even cramps.

My rheumatologist told me to take way more than the recommended dose of Magnesium. he said to at least double it.

This is the Magnesium I take and it doesn’t affect the bowel. It was suggested by my functional med. doctor. I’ve been taking it for years, 2 tablets twice daily. Hope this helps.

I used to get these cramps after I started on liptor. My doctor changed my prescription to crestor. It was better but still got them periodically. I stated taking 100mg of COQ10 once a day. No more cramps!

Here is my two cents worth. I am in my late 80s and have had nighttime leg cramps for about twenty years. I would challenge anyone to give me an idea what works. I have tried everything under the sun from electrolytes, pills, rubs, juices and tonics. I exercise regularly in water aerobics and stretch but it and the other things have made no difference. I tried gabapentin since leg cramps can come from nerves, however, it did not help. I am convinced, however, after trying and logging all attempts that they come from nerves of some kind from my spine, which is one of the ways to get them. Very often, maybe one or two nights a week, the calf cramps hit both at the same time. I get out of bed, stand on them, they go away and I go back to sleep, however, some nights the doubles will hit again. I played pickelball for about fifteen years and used to get inner thigh cramps which make you want to blow you brains out they are so painful. They stopped when I switched to water aerobics. Bottom line, I've given up and I'll live with them as best I can.

@picartist I had a massage therapist show me to use the side of your hand and hit across the arch of your foot ( if you can’t reach you can have someone else do it or I have used the heel of my other foot . Luckily for me it knocks it out and I don’t have the soreness from the tight cramp.

@picartist yes I've tried gabapentin for muscle cramps it's a joke. I've also tried cyclobenzaprine it made pain worse . And I'm with you on doubles I started to cry , I did a gental massage oh what a relief. I've stop all soda, sweet tea and lemonade. Handsome foods cause them. I have had them in one or both feet and my calf while driving oh so not good. I have to brainstorm of how to get somewhere safe. Handcramps I'm with the other person bush down gently . The only other thing that I've tried is keeping leggs warm and try not to bend to far when sleeping. Stretching slowly when getting up from sitting also helps. I wish u the best in dealing with these horrible cramps.

A banana or an avocado have plenty of potassium. I found that cutting off sugar really reduced or stopped the severe leg cramps. I am 73 yo f. Moderately active with pilates at least 4x week. I take mg glycinate 3x per week
