Cost of stem cell therapy at Mayo

Posted by talan @talan, Apr 6, 2017

I am having stem cell therapy on my left knee tomorrow. I did not realize Mayo was doing this already. For those of you who have had this done at Mayo, what was the cost? If you wanted to be part of the research, how do you get into that?

I had stem cells and PRP done at Mayo in Rochester last fall. It was done by Dr. Smith. Total cost was $4650 which included additional injection. I was not eligible for the trial as i have too many other health problems. Dr Smith is in charge of a FDA trial regarding stem cells in knees. You can find the trial information on the Mayo website. Dr. Smith and his staff are excellent in providing information and answers to questions

Did they take the stem cells from both bone marrow and fat? Also, was the procedure done in a sterile room?

It was done in a procedure room under sterile conditions. They took it from the ilsilliac of hip on both sides. Right above your bottom.

was it painful? Sounds like it.
I had fat taken from belly - there r many more Cells derived from belly than bone marrow.
Tiny 1/2 scar down low. - then used for reconstruction - not bone.

I am bone on bone knee cant have replacement because of infection issues. It wasnt real painful lot if pressure made it uncomfortable and the nurse and dr Smith were great coaching me through. Did hold table pretty tight!

If I was Really Bone on Bone the leg would be straight, no bending at all. I got a lite weight knee brace that pushes on side on knee to Open up knee bone to accept stem cells. I saw x-rays from 1 yr a go of bone on bone. Don't know what it looks like this year.
Must decide about Compartmental surgery and holding out for cells.? Any thoughts?
