Standing in the shower is painful for my husband's feet. Help!

Posted by nancyjg @nancyjg, 18 hours ago

Standing in the shower is painful for my husband's feet. He has idiopathic neuropathy, Morton's neuroma, plus the padding on the ball of foot has thinned. This all happened within the past 8 months (I'm writing this on 12/13/25). This week we finished a multi-month master bathroom renovation and gave up our tub, so a bath is not a solution. We've tried many Amazon shower mats, but so far our cat's feeding pad is what is provideing some relief. (!)

Surely others reading this have had the same problem standing in a shower and have found ways to ease the pain. Please help!

A shower chair.
It helps me stay upright. I have a balance disorder and when I shower I sit in the shower chair.

I’ve had a Morton’s neuroma. It is very painful! My podiatrist gave me shots for it.

Good morning @nancyjig
I have a neuropathic condition caused by lots of cowboy days, legs and feet, and the relief I get from pedaling my three wheeled recumbent bike, my wife and I is amazing. Sometimes I ride with socks on only and the pads of my feet feel as if I am having a foot massage. We ride three or four days per eek and I can stand anywhere without much discomfort.
My wife rides barefoot, always and she has no problems whatsoever. We also give each other foot massages and I believe that keeping moving is a major part of our aging process. I hope this helps.

Thank you. It sounds like you've got a great process for handling your neuropathy. Unfortunately with his Morton's neuroma, being in the shower is like standing in a field of marbles.

You're right that we need to keep moving as we age. We do. And I like your idea of foot massages. Thank you!

@SusanEllen66 What a great idea. Our shower is tiny, but that might work. Thank you. And I hope your Morton's pain never returns!!

I had Morton's Neuroma before I had neuropathy and had it removed. I do find it difficult to walk on hard surfaces since having neuropathy - have you tried water shoes? I wear them for aquafit and around a pool and it makes it tolerable. There are varying thicknesses.

I have the same problem. The bottom of my feet - especially the left foot - are very sensitive to pressure against hard surfaces. I can't walk barefoot on hard surfaces - including the hard shower floor. I found that wearing rubber flip-flops in the shower solved the problem for me.

What about trying those very spongy rubber cushion mats you put in front of the kitchen sink to reduce foot pain while doing dishes or cooking? My friend just put one in her kitchen and said it’s great.

Called anti-fatigue mats. Waterproof. I see there are lots of different brands, colors and thicknesses. I hope that might work ❤️

I just googled if these kitchen mats are safe for the shower and it said they can be slippery. Maybe there is a cushioned mat specifically made for showers? Be safe. Hope you find a solution. Maybe these mats will at least help him in the kitchen or other places. ❤️

@kathyv66 I've never heard of water shoes, so I looked them up on Amazon and Crocs that are sandals were among the choices. I didn't realize that Crocs were well cushioned, so I bought them. I'll now look further into water shoes but quickly got the Crocs because he needs something immediately. Thank you!!!
