Low WBC, Low Platelets, Low RBC, Large cells - is it always Leukemia?

Posted by asarnesejr @asarnesejr, Aug 1, 2025

I recently went for routine bloodwork after 5-years and my CBC showed that my WBC is 1.5, RBC is 3.84, Platelet count is 74, Hemoglobin is 13.9 and the Neutrophils are at .7

I had a bone marrow test done yesterday 07/31.

Do the above numbers realistically seem like Lukemia?

@asarnesejr I was diagnosed with MDs in Nov 2020. I have similar numbers. Platelets as low as 55 and high as 76. Been on wait and watch. Labs every 4 months. Yep live your life. If tired rest. That’s my biggest issue is the fatigue. I bruise easy. Takes them awhile for them to fade. Stay busy. Enjoy your family. Your work. Your hobbies. Gods blessings.

@hlmcneely How long can someone wait and watch without it progressing?

REPLY

I’m sure that’s based on individuals and as their numbers drop. I’m sure the dr would then consider medication and another BMB would be performed. No doctor however I’d think that would be correct.

@asarnesejr, here is a listing of all the discussions in the group related to MDS:

I think some of your questions may be addressed in these related discussions:
- Living with MDS (Myelodyplastic Syndromes) https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/living-with-mds/
- Looking for experiences with the progression of MDS https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mds-progression/
- MDS: How to improve my condition in watch & wait?https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mds-3/
- MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome): When to start treatment? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mds-when-to-start-treatment/

Some people are uncomfortable with watch and wait as they feel it is not "taking action". That's why I prefer to call it active surveillance. Your team will monitor your closely.

I do understand that I need to try to be as normal as possible until my diagnosis on 8/11, or I'll be weakened before starting any treatment. The doctor said it could be Leukemia but needs the bone marrow results to make a diagnosis. I asked if that was cancer, he said yes. I replied so I have 5 years to live, he replied 5-10 years.

If I may ask, why is the internet filled with such low percentages of living 5 more years after being diagnosed?

@asarnesejr The internet shows studies that have been done over the last 20 years. In the last 5 years there have been huge advances in the treatment of blood cancers but you can’t always see it in the prognosis stats. Stay away from google.

And … I would not stay with a doctor that told me 5-10 years, (or agreed with it) when there wasn’t even a diagnosis. Are you sure you got that right? Was it an oncologist/haematologist?

Thank you for your input. I hadn't had any symptoms at all and am not on any medications. I just turned 61 and retired last January along with my wife. Plans had included watching our first grandchild during the daytimes while our daughter worked. Now the Doctor is telling me to stay away from crowds and our grandchild once our daughter returns to work (she's a school teacher).

I still do not have any symptoms, except for extreme exhaustion from all the stress and crying.

It was a routine physical, my last bloodwork was back in 2018 and the only indication I could see was that my platelet count was at the minimum at 100. Then with Covid, and 3 years of chronic stress dealing with my dad's dementia, I thought I would take care of myself once I retired. I started exercising, 1-hour a day on the treadmill, push-ups, dropped 20lbs, down to 188 at 6'. To be honest, feeling the best I've felt in a very long time.

If Leukemia, the Doctor told me between 5-10 years left.

@asarnesejr, Even I had similar symptoms like low Platelet counts, RBC, WBC and treating it like anemia. I refused to do Bone Marrow upon advice from my PCP and My son (also a Doctor and Surgeon). I have developed a Fatty Liver in Stage-II after Covid (I took both the COVID shots) and now progressing Stage-4 with Cirrhotic Liver Surface and potential Scarring. I am 69+ and still working, walking and managing well. I am under with Gastroenterologist who checks my liver functions regularly. I strongly believe, my situation is due to Covid Shots (as I did not have any of those issues before) and now due to Chronic Liver disease. What I try to do is 16 hour to 18 hour fasting and eat one good meal + a light meal. Off course, I enjoy Coffee and Tea a bunch. I am also trying some supplements like Total Beets, Wheatgrass Juice Concentrate Powder (Capsules), NAC, etc., to help my condition.

Off course, I try to stay strong without too much googling about my symptoms with Meditation and daily prayer. I do not want to think any disease is a death sentence. Off course it will come when it comes.

I have a friend (35+) who was diagnosed with Brain Tumor and his Doctors gave him 4-6 months with aggressive chemo and radiation therapy. He refused that out come and pursued Homeopathic treatment while undergoing treatment with his doctor. His tumor has been shrinking, and he is still living happily after 10+ years when I met him.

It is my strong belief that Medical Science is not fully developed and doesn't understand God's creation well to be able diagnose accurately. It is to say they are not Gods. They help heal patients with medicines. Actual healing is done by God who is residing in our body.
Hope this helps my friend!
God bless!
