Is anyone else sensitive to smells?
I’ve been dealing with symptoms for just over 3 years now, and received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia just recently. Since the start, I’ve developed this sensitivity to smell where I will start dry heaving at random smells. For example, opening the spice cabinet, giving my dog her food, or taking out the trash. Sometimes it’s not even triggered by smells, instead it’s after I eat a meal, or when I’m very stressed. And it always seems to be worse when I’m having a “flare day.” I never used to have this until I developed my other fibro symptoms. I was curious if anyone else has had a similar experience, and if so, any tips?

I think you mean Gerd. I am familiar with it.
Keep trying til you find a Gerd med. they really help.
I have Hyperesthesia, generally over sensitivity to not only smells, but sights, sounds, taste, and touch. I liken the effect of these sensitivities to fingernails on a blackboard or a forks scraping on a plate. I had to alter my lifestyle, in some cases drastically, in order to mitigate their negative effects.

1 ReactionI live in England and here we call GERD GORD. I suppose us English spell things differently!. I have tried the ppi and proton pump inhibitors with no success as I am intolerant to them. I have been told by my gastroenterologist to take gaviscon. I am still having a terrible smell in my nostrils and now I have a sore throat which makes things worse. The fibromyalgia is obviously making me oversensitive. I am also really tired...and of course in worse pain than usual...
@fayer absolutely smells, repetitive noise, cold. All these come with fibromyalgia. After 40 years I am still extra sensitive, Someone was smoking pot outside this morning and I had an instant headache. Dogs barking are also instant headaches as well as loud music.

Sorry about that . My d. lives in Wales. She fills me in about some things but not that one. I do not bend over for at least an hour after I eat or I get the burn.
Sounds like you are getting a cold as well as everything else.
good luck, P.
Since I was diagnose 45 years ago I have been extremely sensitive o smells. Immediate migraines to any smoke or scents, vomiting with others. Also hearing is extra sensitive can't stand loud volumes.
@1kay2 it’s called HPS highly sensitive person. I am emotionally sensitive on top of all that. I don’t get migraines. But if someone barfs I start gagging myself! And the smells - ugh a dirty disper in the maket and cigarette smoke 5 car lengths away! I inherited from my father - his was smell sensitivity- mom could only bath in Jean Nate and wear a single drop of Maja (a lemon scent from Spain).
I think we are all in high alert mode and everything is enhanced with fibromyalgia. All our senses seem to be working overtime. I still have a constant smell in my nostrils which isn't nice . I am constantly tired and had a melt down the other day as getting alot of different symptoms from a flare up. If only there was a straight fix....
@guineapiglover Yes, constant and foul smell inside my nasal passages. Gross, right?
Most definitely gross. Something has obviously died in there. I can't bear the smell of toilets especially the one in my local cinema. All the smells people usually hate body odour, body fluids almost take my breath away. I can smell perfume from a long way away which is much nicer I suppose. I didn't realise that fibromyalgia has changed my life in so many ways and some people that know me pre diagnosis haven't really learnt to adapt to the new me. It's so draining, I am tired and like a zombie. When people are talking I am sometimes too tired to hold long conversations, I still manage to work but now I am on Christmas holidays I have slept for 12 hours if I don't put my alarm on.
