Eligard vs Orgovyx: Questions about liver damage
My husband received his first Eligard injection in May 2025. This month was time for his next injection. I requested Orgovyx. One urologist I spoke with said he feels Orgovyx enhances the chance of liver damage and being on Aberaterone compounds that. Does anyone have any information or experience with this?

Orgovyx may have a slightly higher chance of liver function issues than Lupron, but they are considered generally transient, mild, and rarely required stopping the medication. But then you look at Zytiga, and it can be even more damaging to the liver in some cases.
I know a few people that are taking both Orgovyx And Zytiga without problems. I took Zytiga for 2 1/2 years and never had any problems with my liver function, But never took it with Orgovyx At the same time.
I think it will be difficult to find people that can really answer this question, Sounds like the doctor is just being protective.
I was on Lupron for six years, Getting six month shots. I’ve been on Orgovyx For almost 3 years and the only real difference I’ve noticed is I get fewer hot flashes. I switched because lupron Cost me $800 more a year than Orgovyx, which is essentially free. After all these years on ADT, it could be the reduced hot flashes are just due to my body Getting over that one side effect.
Just some things to think about, You could ask another doctor as well.

7 ReactionsHello @jeffmarc, just reading your reply and something that really struck me was “Orgovyx being essentially free”. Well in my case Orgovyx price is almost $100.00 per pill so it’s $3,000.00 for a 30 day supply. My co-pay is $920.00 per month. Thankfully our max out of pocket for prescription drugs in 2025 is $2,000.00. Therefore I paid the $2,000.00 for Orgovyx. End of year just around the corner so I’ll be paying the $920.00 for a couple months again. This Prostate cancer is expensive, but better than the alternative. Radiation cost was $128,000.00 and my co-pay is $2,760.00. A PSMA scan in this area is $14,300.00. Okay, I’ll stop complaining now…… I could write a book. Gee maybe that’s a good idea.

I am also on Nubeqa. That costs about $12,000 today, And getting my prescription in January paid the $2000 I needed to pay for my medicine for the year. So getting the Orgovyx After that was free As are all other drugs I take.
You’re right it costs about $3000.

2 Reactions@kenporter Ken, let‘s get you some copay relief. I get Orgovyx 90-day supplies from Biologics by McKesson pharmacy which also connected me with a PAN Foundation grant that covers all my copay, up to $2000. Worth inquiring. P.S. My PSMA PET scan was just over $20000, but $1100 copay. Grateful for insurance.

3 Reactions@gkgdawg, what treatment did your husband proceed with? How are they monitoring potential damage to the liver? Does he already have a compromised liver?
@colleenyoung
Hi, Colleen:
My husband is continuing with the Orgovyx. He doesn't have a compromised liver and we watch the results of blood tests to see if there is any change there. I know that Orgovyx doesn't stay in the system as long, and I guess that is my hope if and when my husband can stop taking the hormone treatments. We went to see a new urologist a couple of weeks ago and he, basically, gave us no hope that my husband's testosterone levels and sexual capabiities will come back after having the radiation. I am hoping that he is mistaken.

1 ReactionDoes anyone take creatine, along with the workouts in the gym, in the hope of increasing or maintaining muscle mass while on Abiraterone (Zytiga) and Orgovyx?
@gkgdawg
Not taking creatine But I have been taking a lot of protein, which is what my son who is a personal trainer says is the thing that helps you build muscle. I have protein heavy cereal in the morning add chicken to my salad At lunch and eat chicken or fish at dinner. Also was using protein powder for quite a while.
About a year ago, I could not get off the floor without pulling myself up onto a chair or a bed or a fence. I’d been on ADT for seven years And it really did a job on my muscles. Started going to the gym Three times a week and doing a lot of extra protein and within four months I was able to stand up on my own. I’ve also been using stronger weights as time has gone by.
What I’ve read is that creatinine may help but is not all that beneficial.
