Aquablation: Post-surgery expectations

Posted by Phil, Alumni Mentor @upstatephil, Jan 26, 2024

After decades of pills to (partially) manage BPH, I am scheduled for aquablation at Mayo JAX in mid-Feb. Has anyone had that procedure done? What was post-surgery like? What were your experiences regarding regular vs. retrograde ejaculation?

My expectations are high. My general health is good+ (71 yo), my prostate is enlarged but not massive, my PSA's suggest no cancer concerns. The surgeon expects a low-risk procedure (no incisions I believe) and a quick recovery (unless something unexpected pops up). I appreciate it's impossible to predict surgical outcomes with certainty - I would like to hear of others' experiences to help set my expectations.

@art12 My situation is virtually identical to yours. I'm, 62 , have 138cc prostate with a large median lobe pressing into my bladder. I have the Aquablation procedure schedule for early December. My wife and I have a large Christmas party (50-60) people scheduled to be at our home 10 days after the Aquablation procedure and just 5 days after the catheter removal. The party was scheduled prior to the Aquablation, otherwise we wouldn't have done it that way. My question is, could you have reasonably tolerated entertaining for 4+ hours in your home 10 days post procedure? Am I a fool to even consider doing so? We could cancel, but save the date cards already went out, so a bit of a hassle. I can skip the alcohol and bathrooms will be close. Thx

@wadaman01 I know these things vary from person to person , but my bleeding did not stop for nearly 3 weeks post procedure . I thought I was ok a week after the catheter removal and was horrified while wearing white pants in public . Be careful and be flexible

@wadaman01 yes I would be fine for weeks then all of the sudden blood in urine with clots . did not last long at all and my Doc said that was normal . I will say the procedure was much more complicated then was originally indicated however 5 months after procedure I do notice a lot of positive changes and if this continues the procedure was ultimately

It would be nice to hear some positive good news stories. I had Green Laser PVP over 2 years ago. Seemed to work for 1 year. I am scheduled for Aquablation operation at end of January. Any real success stories ? I only see a minimal few here in the forum.

@stevedc1 I wrote detailed post about my husband(I’m a nurse) from the day of surgery till now. He is 16 months out and had a great surgeon, followed by a smooth recovery. If u can’t find the post, I can answer questions about his recovery.

Where did he receive his care?

@stevedc1 I was completely asymptomatic until I couldn't pee at all. Prostate was 120 grams. I spent 4 months on a catheter in the summer of 2024. Tamolosin and Finesteride both cratered my blood pressure and caused a severe case of flushing. Happy to say I had Aquablation last September. Bleeding took about 10 days to completely recede. From the first moment I was peeing like a racehorse and continue to do so. No sexual side effects. I had a great surgeon, and the surgeon does matter. I'm 66 and in good shape. If my prostate should regrow and cause problems down the road, I wouldn't hesitate to have another aquablation.

Im two months post aquablation. Has significantly improved my typical bph symptoms and eliminated my concerns about acute retention. I previously posted about a few minor hiccups during my experience. Even at this stage I feel confident in recommending the procedure. Dont hesitate to ask lots of questions of prospective providers. How many procedures has your surgeon performed etc. Ideally at least 30.
