Can Neuropathy be cured?

Posted by catstx @catstx, Sep 8, 2021

I’ve had P. neuropathy for 30 years. Just recently I’ve better controlled my blood sugar. So, I’m wondering if Neuropathy ever goes away, Or, if once the nerves are dead they’re just dead

Thank you. I “stand” Corrected. Will you agree there is “no” cure for CIPN?

Not accurate. There are many many idiopathic PN “customers” not associated with chemo or diabetes. I am one of these people. Otherwise healthy, non diabetic, food conscious, active, in good shape PN suffering 69 year old, 4 years ago diagnosed with IPN. Been to many DR’s.

@rybren I too and one of the idiopathic with axonal sensory motor PN with drop foot. Diagnosed at 65 (10 years ago), even Mayo in MN in 2020 could not give me a clue as to cause. Many many causes almost all unknown, no cure but only able to offer some treatments, some work, some don't. For many of us, a mystery. Odd though how many cases start later in life, in 60's and 70's...perhaps a clue??

@3740 in my case they don’t know what’s causing it so rough road fixing it. It would be good to hear what fully diagnosed individuals say that adjusted once the causative agent was found. Did they see improvements?
My situation not great but not getting worse. No alcohol, no diabetes, I watch carefully for triggers but can’t seem to ID. I believe Covid has something to do with it but who knows. Dr’s don’t seem to know so how could we really know.
Peace and Love

@itlooksunny ..Just a suggestion....I have suffered from severe Trigeminal nerve
pain (side of face) caused by a dentist. I have discovered thru my own researching on the Mayo Clinic site, a non-invasive nerve pain procedure called the Scrambler Technique. It actually scrambles the signal from the brain for pain...it's especially good for Neurpathy pain problems. I found a small clinic in Clifton, N.J. (CalmareTherapy) that I went to for treatment....there are also other clinics around the country that specialize in this treatment...it's 10 sessions..each session is about 30-40 minutes and totally not painful....check it out...I have now been pain free for about 6 weeks now....

@duchess926 I heard a commercial yesterday on FM radio here in Detroit, MI. Offering solutions to neuropathy and cancer pain. I wrote the name down, Michigan Scrambler, and planned to investigate it. They said it was the same program from Mayo Clinic. I suffer in both feet and walk with a cane because it throws my balance off. I currently take Lyrica. It calms the pins and needle pain, but it still nags on. I am going to be checking out The Scrambler here in the D. God, I hope it will possibly work for me too. I'll let you know.

@jamessaxo I eat meat with every meal I've ever had in my adult life. Lots of turkey and chicken, as well as pork and beef, pinto beans, potatoes, rice, and bread.

@mrmacabre Thats great that u eat plenty of animal protein, the source of vitamin B12 (cobalamin). Great up to middle age.
Alcohol numbs billion of tiny villi lining our 20 ft long intestine inner wall, hence reduced thru the wall absorption. Then our elderly stomach is smaller, less acid. The acid extracts B12 from food. I am 83 and take 50 micrograms B12 daily. Methylcobalamin is the best of the 3 types. Am not waiting for my doctor to give me monthly B12 injections. 3 months ago my dr, wrote on my file " non drinker, " am proud of that. Good luck.

I had a Doctor (MC Rochester) tell me that nerves take a long time to regrow; that is, nerve cell take the most time to regrow and replace old/dead nerve cells. My PN was caused by .or a symptom of becoming Type 2 diabetic. My GP was watching me as my maternal grandfather was diabetic and I inherited it from him. So di my younger brother. nearly 35 years ago, I was planting Walnut seedlings (1000 trees) during the Summer and Fall. Over the winter my left foot (I am left-handed) went numb on the ball and toes. In March '91, I went to see my GP who said, "Congratulations, you are now a Type 2 diabetic." He occasionally had a sense of humor. I went to see an Endocrinologist who prescribed my first diabetic medicine. My reacted to it after four vending machine coffee a day with migraines. I was switched to other meds.

I recently (two years ago) dropped 30 kilograms--27% of my total body weight. After my birthday we joined a gym. I started getting foot cramps especially in my right foot. I tried a bottle of Body Armor (799ml) electrolytes and it seemed to relieve the cramps. I try to get to the gym 3 times a week. I consume a bottle of BA after the gym. I also recently discovered I now need the bottle even if I miss the gym! My first conclusion is that my level of electrolytes may be on or below what my body needs to avoid cramps. I can't tell if it is affecting my PN. I am numb up to 1/2 way to my knees. I do not feel light touches or temperatures but I do feel hard pressure--leg and foot massages. Also two years ago, I went to Scotland for two long weeks with a stop over in Iceland, I love the Blue Lagoon (world's biggest hot tub). Two signs I chose to ignore there: "people with diabetes should not go in" and "1.5 million people visited last year". What the signs may really have meant: "Diabetics with PN may not be able to sense the water may be too hot for them." and "1.5 million people from around the world may carry their local bacteria that your body may not be able to control or combat." I went into the hot water with a blister on my right big toe. It swelled and burst open. I got a bacteria infection. As we ended our trip--over half my family was with me--my foot was red from my toes to going up to my ankle. We went to the Emergency facilities in Inverness. I was given an IV of Antibiotics and placed in a ward in the Hospital. The doctor told me that it was a good thing I came to them because if I had gone home on Saturday as scheduled, I probably would not have survived the trip! The comedy really started when I came home and went to the local hospital. But that is another story.

Nerves eventually die off and the pain will go away. So thirty years that is more than likely what has happened. Do you have sensation in your feet?

@suzette70 My education is Electrical Engineering (I wouldn't hire me to change light bulbs) but I do remember some of my education. Think of nerves not as cells but as organic wires, the myelin is the insulation around the wire. Excessive glucose tends to attack and damage the myelin. When the myelin is gone, the nerve shorts out and destroys the electric signals. The result is PN.

Almost 20 years ago, I got a copy of Dr. Barnard's "How to Reverse Diabetes" and his program is to follow a Vegan diet--no animal fat or protein--and it reduced my insulin daily requirement of over 50 per day to under 20. I tried to take the Vitamin B complex but some of the B vitamins elevate blood sugar. I take just B12.
