Have you tried the new Protocol 525 product for neuropathy relief?

Posted by John, Volunteer Mentor @johnbishop, Apr 21, 2020

I have used the original version of the Protocol 525 product (https://theprotocolworks.com/) since 2016. I have idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy with the only symptom being numbness in both legs. When I started taking the protocol, the numbness was just below my knees. After 2 months, the numbness seems to be just above the ankles which is subjective on my part with no additional testing. I do feel it is a win-win for me as my neuropathy has not progressed like I was told it would by the neurologist. I have continued taking the protocol in hopes that it may continue to roll back the numbness symptoms. I have noticed some new feeling in my feet in the last 2 months. Some feeling has returned to me feet and they seem to feel better lately although I still have the numbness – hard to describe the difference.

The Protocol 525 is not a cure for neuropathy. It treats the pain and discomfort symptoms of neuropathy without the drugs which have their own side effects. Have you tried the Protocol 525 or the original protocol? Did it help? If yes, how? If no, please share.

Note: I have no commercial investment in the protocol and I am sharing this information as someone who has found some degree of relief using this combination of supplements. I also discussed these supplements with my Mayo primary care team before I started taking them. The care team sent them to the pharmacist for review who did not have any major concerns for me taking them.

@crissma, It's no longer called the Protocol 525. Now it's just the Protocol since they reduced the number of capsules you have to take from 5 morning, 2 afternoon, 5 evening to 4 morning, 2 afternoon and 4 evening. They are also working on a liquid version but not sure when it will be available. Here's their website - https://theprotocolworks.com/.

List of the ingredients in the PDF below.

Hi Mike @domiha, I thought I would respond to your private message here in the Protocol discussion so that others would also see my latest update on taking the Protocol (https://theprotocolworks.com/).

My symptoms for my diagnosis of idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy are numbness and some tingling but no pain in my legs or feet from the neuropathy. Battling with neuropathy since my mid 40s, now 82. When I started taking the Protocol in Sept 2016 the numbness and tingling was just below my knees and progressing slowly. By Dec 2016 I noticed that the numbness seemed to have went down to just above my ankles. This is really subjective on my part but it did feel better and started giving me hope. Then in June 2018, I was diagnosed with lymphedema in my legs and the treatment is to wear compression socks which squeezes the you know what out of your legs and gives you another constant feeling of having your legs in a vice. It's not the same as neuropathy but just another symptom to deal with. I can wiggle and feel my toes but still have a level of numbness in my feet but I am thankful for some level of feeling in the feet. I do feel the Protocol has helped slow and possibly stopped the progression but I have no desire to get a skin punch biopsy to find out. I am still taking the protocol and do think that it has played a major part in stopping the progression of the neuropathy but again emphasize that it's my own opinion.

The cost of supplements is always a consideration for me. The cost of the protocol is about $6/day. If I remember correctly when I first started and we were ordering the supplements individually off of Amazon or the manufacturers site, the cost was a little more than $6/day along with the added problem of having to order each supplement at different times due to running out of each supplements at different times.

If you are thinking about trying the Protocol to help with your neuropathy symptoms, I would recommend trying it for at least 3 months based on my personal experience. I also recommend discussing it with your doctor or neurologist. Here's the document previous shared that you can print out and discuss with your doctor or neurologist.

In case you haven't already seen it, the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a list of supplements shown to help with nerve health - https://www.foundationforpn.org/vitamins-and-supplements-for-nerve-health/.

Your neuropathy journey sounds much like mine. I only have numbness and some tingling but no pain which brought me to Connect back in 2016. I shared my neuropathy journey in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/.

If you are looking for other more specific topics, the search function on Connect is really great for locating other discussions and member experiences. Have you tried it? If not, I would recommend giving it a test run. It's easy, just click the small magnifying glass icon at the top of the window next to the little notifications bell.

@johnbishop Thanks for the welcome, John, and for the link to Connect, which I will dive into this evening with great gusto 🙂
The warming period before posting links seems wise ... thanks for providing the links to the paper titles I posted.
And I have not visited the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy so a dive into the supplement list will be viewed with pleasure. I, like many others, have spend considerable time trying to determine not just supplements but doses so hopefully I'll find some help there as well.
I have surmised that the timetable for checking or correcting nerve damage is highly speculatively and of course dependent on the level of damage, this all coupled with the individual lifestyles. 6 months seems like a short period of time relative to my condition and even if a correction isn't experienced at least I can hope for some containment.
Importantly I don't view this path as a negative. It is simply a part of who I am both in spirit and body and something to be viewed with curiosity and enjoyment.

@johnbishop Thanks, John. So this makes 9 years of The Protocol for you. Glad to hear you feel it has helped. After reading your reply, I FINALLY sat down and calculated my cost from Amazon for the supplements I take. (One of those things that one intends to do at some point but always finds a way to put it off! 😁). I am currently taking R-Alpha Lipoic Acid, Magnesium Glycinate, Benfotiamine(which is the Thiamine), Acetyl L-Carnitine, B-12 and D-3. Those cost me about $20/month. If I add the things I am not taking, as follows, it would cost these amounts: K2 as MK7, that is an additional $2/month. Methylfolate would add another $3/month. Organic Flaxseed would be another $4/month. Biotin 20000 mcg would be another $3/month. B3 Niacin 20 mg - another $3/month. B2 Riboflavin 50 mg would add another $4/month. That would cover all the ingrediants of The Protocol for a total of $39/month compared to $180/month for The Protocol. Of course, manufacturers of The Protocol divide the dosages to take 3 times throughout the day, and there may be some reason why that also makes it more effective. Plus, they are perhaps selecting "choice supplements" to mix for their formula. And, as you said, trying to take all the same supplements on a daily basis means having to reorder from Amazon at different times, because one supplement may come 240 to a bottle, while another comes 90 to a bottle, etc.... so I am constantly juggling... except that now I have put the ones I DO take on automatic refill so I never run out. But yes.... it can be a hassle to keep up the supply and count out the pills..... whereas with The Protocol everything is already organized for you and you take them from the different bottles as suggested throughout the day. So The Protocol would definitely be easier to manage. In summary, I'm glad that you can afford The Protocol and that is seems to be making a difference for you. It's amazing that it seemed to reverse some of the numbness and tingling that seemed to be inching up your legs. As I mentioned to you before, I did try it for about 3 months, but then I realized the cost was going to be prohibitive for my budget. I already take 10 other prescription medications for various issues and those have copays. One can save $60 by purchasing a year's supply of The Protocol for $2100. Thank you again for your reply, John. You are such a supporter on this forum and you always have links and resources to share as we travel this path. You are a blessing to so many. Wishing you all the best for the holidays!! Mike
