Slow transit constipation and surgery

Posted by januaryjane @januaryjane, Aug 22, 2019

Hi, I have slow transit constipation and Ive tried everything with little help. Amitiza, linzess, trulance...diet modification, pelvic floor therapy...etc. It affects the quality of my life every day. It started at 18 and im almost 34. I cannot maintain a job or even finish school. Just saw a new gastro and he wants me to "drag my feet" on surgery. I know it is not to be taken lightly but i want a life, while im rather young. Just really stressed and would like any thoughts or info that would help. Thanks.

The Mineral oil with applesauce has very strict rules. You can only use under Doctors care. So do not do until you ralk with GI

@sensationalsmilesinc you mentioned strict rules about using Mineral Oil and applesauce. Could you tell us what they are, please? I’m a nurse and have not heard of any rules, but maybe they are meant for elder care. Thanks!

I was told by GI take 2 Hours after meal at night before bed. You can not take if laying down due to possible aspiration. must sit up for at least 10 minutes due to possible aspiration for some patients. You do not want to get Mineral Oil in lungs can create a whole set of new problems. You can read about it under Mineral Oil orally and it has to be FOOD GRADE.

I take olive oil before I get ready for bed. Helps everything slide out. Also ordered IBS Clear and take one with breakfast. I do not take the second one as recommended as this one really helps. Good luck.

with all the informationI have read. I never see anything about blood tests for Pancreas. Blood test should be taking to see where your Amylase levels are and Lipase. Pancreas aids in digestion.

Hi, I just wanted to add i cut back on stimulants, now stomach is calmer but the constipation is worse. I got put on them last year, but am afraid of everyday use, even if a Dr says its safe. Im getting a sibo test in the mail, so we will see what that says. My constipation just aggravates my body and inflammation. This weekend my Epstein barr virus reactivated, i missed my pelvic floor appt, just makes me so frustrated. Im just lost as what to do. Sorry this may seem like a blah, blah, poor me, but i have little support, and all of this is driving me mad. Ive in the past taken breaks, try not to think about it, free myself of appointments. I might get a little rest but that is time ive lost not working on this. Ive had most of my young adult life being plagued by this. I want an independent life, but my body is fighting against itself. Burn out is here again.

@januaryjane I understand how frustrated you are. It took 10 months to get a diagnosis after my local gastroenterologist PA did no testing just told me to take MiraLAX for the Constipation. I waited 10 months to get an appointment with another hospital system. He had me tested to determine my diagnoses. Then that gastroenterologist retired. Waited several more months to see another one who I have only seen twice. I tried several antibiotics that did not work. Now he is retiring. I have appointments for second opinions at two other health care systems. I need someone who can work with me regularly. I also have been undergoing pelvic floor therapy for 20 sessions with few results. They keep telling me to control my stress. But no remission for my OMI is making my stress rocket.
I have appointments with two other health care providers over the next two months in hopes for better care.

Did your constipation start after the gall bladder surgery (that sounds about 20 years ago)?

@elle1233
Just FYI, my constipation started after a hernia repair surgery. My abdomen was so weakened by the laparoscopic surgery, I could not bear down at all. I was terrified of popping a new hernia in the weakened areas. I became dependent on laxatives. Prior to the surgery at age 70, I had never taken a laxative in my entire life. Now, four years later, I am still constipated and just starting Motegrity. Best Wishes!

Hello,
I see your post was from years ago, so you may not participate in this site anymore. I have the worst redundant sigmoid (torturous colon) my gastroenterologist has ever seen. Have constipation, gas, bloating, cramps etc. Just wondering if you had a re-section and how you are doing today. Best Wishes.

I also have colonic inertia. As a matter of fact, I can no longer deal with it. Will be going back to my surgeon. To remove. My large intestine.

Thank you, and good luck to you, my friend. My gastroenterologist has told me more than once, "Unfortunately, there are cases when surgery is the best option." You are in my thoughts. 🤞🏻🙏🏻

I am not the person from years ago -and I wanted to reply - in addition to severe tortuous colon - I alos have the 2 spincter muscles not working. To address the latter, 2 months ago I had botox (I do not know the medical term) injected in the muscle and also dilation. It took about 6-7 weeks to get some relief. I started a program of pelvic floor exercised and I believe that has been changing my life for the better. I also am working with a nurse who is a nutritionist who has a program that works for me. I have gone weekly, now monthly. I also have been doing mild yoga. I am getting relief and know that it will never be persfect and this is better. When needed - and it is being needed less as time goes by - I take a stool softener or mirolax and always - which you do - plenty of water. If I feel I do not have enough fiber through the food I eat I will take some form of psyllium. Marilyn
