Did your mother take Diethylstilbestrol (DES) while pregnant with you?

Posted by cyndiefromnc @cyndiefromnc, Sep 6, 2025

I am a DES baby, which means my mother took the drug Diethylstilbestrol (DES) while pregnant with me.

DES was prescribed to prevent miscarriage from 1938-1971 in the US. (1977 in some other countries.) A 1953 US study proved it did not prevent miscarriage but did cause cancer in the mothers and a slew of problems for the babies in utero, including.......premature births, infertility, cancer, severe depression........the list goes on.

Because DES was developed in a public lab, any pharmaceutical company could manufacture it. They all profited greatly and thus continued promoting it regardless of the 1953 study.

It was also prescribed for morning sickness. (And possibly to dry milk? I'm not sure about that. Someone else may know.)

I would love to hear from other DES babies. I had many female problems over the years. I was able to have children, but it was a long road. I also suffered depression throughout my life and have now been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

I am wondering if any other women whose mothers or grandmothers took DES have suffered with severe depression and/or have developed the autoimmune disease, Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

I, too, am a DES daughter. Now 70 years old, I experienced dermoid cysts of my ovaries, a T shaped retroverted uterus that was septated, an ectopic pregnancy, fibroid uterine tumors and a complete hysterectomy with oopharectomy at 48. I am now being followed for 5 cysts in my pancreas, 3 called IPMN and 2 called MCN, all potentially being able to become cancerous. I have been prediabetic my entire adult life. Interesting to me is the MCN are almost always found in women and have receptors for estrogen. I never could take estrogen as I would develop awful migraines when I tried. As I have aged and learn of new problems in myself, I check research papers being done as the researchers are able to study our aging cohort. Dr. Rebecca Troisi has studied DES exposure for a long time and had an article published in 2021 on DES/diabetes and pancreatic cancers. I will be followed every 6 months for MRI MRCP alternating with endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration. Right now I am on the search for learning the best nutritional approach for me to take for pancreatic health. I wish for each person here the best of health outcomes!

My mother claims she was given DES while pregnant with me in late 1977 or into 1978. She's not known for being truthful but I did hit puberty at 7, which is when i was found to have numerous ovarian cysts on both ovaries a tilted uterus, extremely painful periods so I was placed on hormonal birth control at 7 years old. I got pregnant extremely easily, while on birth control .... pill, shot and IUD and had several miscarriages. I had an incompetent cervix, premature labor and months of bedrest with each baby, had #3 at 21. I had to basically beg for a tubal and the deliveries all involved hemorrhaging. I hit perimenopause around 43/44. I've had severe depression, lifelong but I also was raised by a borderline mother. I've been diagnosed with aspergers, adhd, severe depression with suicidal ideation.

Hello @kcreel78 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am sorry to hear of all the health issues you have experienced. Here is a link to an article about DES from the National Cancer Institute. This lists the many diagnoses that can occur to the children of women who were treated with DES:
https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/hormones/des-fact-sheet
Here is a post from @kmfdallas that provides a very helpful brochure on the topic: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/1428273/

Is your current medical team aware of the possible DES exposure? If so, do they think it might be related to your current health issues?

@kcreel78 Thank you for sharing. It sounds like you experienced the effects of in utero exposure to DES. There is a new code you should provide all your doctors on your exposure.
DES Info has a DES Pamphlet that might be helpful to read and to share with your doctors.

@kmfdallas
Thanks for this information on the new diagnosis code. I wasn't aware of this before.

My mother was given a medication while pregnant with me to insure that she has a small baby since I was her first. She can't remember the name of the medication that she was given. The year was 1953-54. Anyone hear of this and was given Diethylstilbestrol (DES)? I was born with a stunted LAD or left anterior descending artery which caused a childhood heart attack and a badly scarred apex.

@hopeful33250 I worked for 10 years with CMS and the CDC to get this code. DES exposed patients need to share this code with their doctors. Once entered into the EMR, data can begin to be collected.

@deniseheart DES was prescribed heavily in the 1950s. I have not read any research on this type of cardiac defect butt plausible since we are now seeing cardiac effects of exposure in adults. Please share your DES exposure with all of your doctors.
