Can tadalafil counter the ED effects of saw palmetto?

Posted by rich72 @rich72, Nov 23 1:26pm

I recently had a months-long UTI. My urologist said my prostate was somewhat enlarged (my psa is excellent). He prescribed Flomax to help ensure I emptied my bladder thoroughly. An ultrasound changed his assessment from "somewhat" to "large," and added that the ultrasound showed I wasn't completely emptying my bladder. Because Flomax made me very sleepy, I switched to 5 mg tadalfil daily. I would like to take saw palmetto to help shrink my prostate, but have read it can cause ED. My question is, will the tadalafil counter the ED-causing effects of saw palmetto?

After years of success, saw palmetto stopped working for me. My urologist preferred Cialis (tadalafil) over Flomax, and b/c it is usually prescribed for ED, it will actually lessen sexual dysfunction and improve with 10mg (safe for a daily dose). My experience with both Levitra and Viagra gave me headaches and increased my BP. Maybe consider going off the SP for a while to see if Cialis alone might help?
Good Luck

Rich 72. I am 80 years old and have been taking saw palmetto for approximately 30 years and it has been successful for me. I have seen a comment or two that it may cause ED, but I have never experienced this and have never read this as being a side effect. I am currently taking 5 mg of Cialis daily as prescribed by my urologist and this has helped some. I would suggest that you look at the life extension Ultra prostate product as this is an excellent product for enlarged prostate and prostate health. I do not think saw palmetto will cause ED.

Thanks! That's really encouraging.

@chuckiepoo1 There are a lot more than a comment two about saw palmetto causing ED. Check out the discussion: "Anyone experience ED after using Saw Palmetto?" on this forum--I just added a recent experience of my own from decades ago when I used saw palmetto for a month. In a certain percentage of men it can have devastating effects similar to finasteride as far as decreasing sex drive or causing ED because it inhibits the conversion of testosterone to the more potent form, DHT. And the effects can come on within a week or a month of using it or and can last years after stopping, and in some cases can cause permanent dysfunction.

Have you really felt that Saw Palmetto actually does what it says? I tried using it for years back in my 40's and 50's but it didn't have any real effect as my prostate always remained enlarged with my PSA pushing the 5.0 limit. I've since found out that that number is actually arbitrary based on you age, so it's NOT a drop dead moment when you go over it!
I switched over to 20mg Tadalafil back in my 50's and it's been wonderful for my ED! Since then, just over a year ago, I've had Holep non-cancerous surgery done. I still use the 20mg Tadalafil but a different regime...

I haven't used saw palmetto before but I was thinking of staking it to shrink my prostate, or at least keep it from growing. Then I read that some people who used it in studies complained of ED after using it for a while. Chuckiepoo1 (above) said he's been using saw palmetto for 30 years with no trace of ED. He recommended Life Extension Ultra Prostate. I got some and just started taking it. I think all supplements work for some and not for others, and that the same probably holds true for their side effects. Anyway, I'm going to give it a shot. Next checkup is six months from now, so we'll see. Good luck that PSA. I've heard the same about the "panic number" getting higher as you age. My urologist says with men my age, he doesn't get really concerned (as in urgent) unless it comes in at 6.
