My wife was recently diagnosed and I am scared

At 79 I had a lumpectomy, chemo for a year and radiation for 6 weeks. I didn't take an aromatase inhibitor because I'd heard bad things about them. I ended up with peripheral neuropathy in my feet from the chemo and I can no longer drive because I can't feel the brake pedal. But my blood work consstently shows no signs of cancer. At 84 I'm having a lot of fun, including a recent trip to Cancun with my children.

I totally understand your concern for your wife and you too. It effects both of you. I was diagnosed in July and had a lumpectomy in August. The worst part for my husband and me was not knowing what was going to happen. Fortunately, all that worry was for nothing as the surgeon was able to remove the cancer and get all the margins. I didn't have any chemo, because tumor was tested and it wouldn't have done anything for me. They suggested radiation, but I declined. Like some of the other women, I did take the Anastrozole which is supposed to reduce the Estrogen but the side effects caused me to stop after 3 weeks. Instead, like others looking to eat more healthy vegetables, that should help against the Estrogen building up. Educate yourselfs, there is a lot on line. Hopefully your wife will have an easy time of it like. Me. I was afraid the stress would kill me not the cancer.

@mimi09 here’s another twist on a diagnosis: there’s always a % who has breast cancer. If not YOU then who should get breast cancer…your sister? bff? daughter? your mother?? what about your cousin? niece? husband? your surgeon? Almost all of us have some-
thing. Hearts, lungs, brains, eyes, all manor of cancers. Is one better or easier to face? I doubt it.

At least we don’t live in the multitudes of countries where undeclared wars are raging, genocide waged, starvation rampant. I might be too Pollyanna for y’all, but we HAVE medical care. Expensive but it’s there…
Thank whatever power you choose for what you have today because tomorrow isn’t promised.

Amen Mimi!!!!! Love your message. AND, my new friend from the hospital where I had my mastectomy and 15 lymph nodes removed, she surrounds herself with upbeat people. As I do. I feel awesome. Let's not think about the bad. Research, research and treat yourself well. Diet, people, music, prayer. It truly makes a difference. Hugs to you, my Pink Sis!!!!!

I was diagnosed w/ breast CA in 2014. I had a lumpectomy, radiation and took oral chemotherapy. There were no metastases or recurrences. I do a breast check every month.

I am sorry you feel scared - I think it is natural to fear something that could take your loved one away. And maybe it is even harder to watch a loved one struggle. But reassured breast cancer treatments have advanced a lot and survivors are living much longer - and with a higher quality of life. Cherish your past but embrace your future - you will get through this together. With Best Wishes -
