Watermelon Tip: Foods with lycopene that may protect against cancer

Posted by eldorado80 @eldorado80, Apr 4, 2025

I eat watermelon now almost every day since discovered. The Lycopene in watermelon, cooked tomatoes and several other sources containing lesser amounts is supposed to be a cancer killer that has several other benefits.

Have you tried broccoli sprouts? there's something in them that's super good too, my husband makes this "cancer killer" sort of salad and eats it twice a day.
Cilantro, broccoli sprouts, bell pepper, avocado and probably some other things, no lettuce so I guess it's not a salad..... then maybe at night he'll fry up some wild salmon and he eats these twice a day and nothing else and he LOVES it, lost weight at first because he cut out sugar and carbs but for about a month he's kept the same weight.

@beaquilter About 8 months before my recurrent PCa diagnosis, My glucose and A1C put me at the high end of the pre-diabetes range. I’ve never been a big sugar eater, but I cut out sugar and products containing sugar entirely. Stevia is my only sweetener. I also made sure that I balanced carbs with protein and fats when I ate. I lost about eight ponds, my energy level through the day really evened out, my mood in general was just better, and my glucose and A1C came back into normal range. All this has helped not only physically, but mentally, in dealing with my cancer relapse and getting through eight weeks of radiation therapy (just finished last week). In an odd way, the pre-diabetes “wake up” was a positive development. If nothing else, a healthy diet just improves quality of life, which is reason alone to carry on.

@beaquilter Sulforaphane is the ingredient in broccoli sprouts. I posted a report authored by Mayo's physicians on this topic, but it was taken down after several days. Why..go figure since it was a Mayo-generated research on the positive research metrics. For those who read this, do your homework on this interesting topic. But, sulforaphane seems to slow cancer cell growth and as such impact the PSA in a positive manner. Do I take this supplement? Yes, I buy from Amazon. Why? 2010 underwent proton radiation therapy (PSA: 6.47 Diagnosis as slow-growing prostate cancer; 2.5 months at Loma Linda Hospital with 50 morning treatment at $3300. per treatment. Flash forward 10 years and PSA began to climb; I started taking this supplement after MRI and PET scan showed no cancer, yet PSA kept increasing. Since taking this supplement, the increase in PSA has STOPPED. Take this example for what it is..for the right individual, this natural supplement may slow cancer growth meaning longer life without the downsides of ADT or some other drug. Do your research on this topic and make your own judgment on this entry. The total cost was paid through TriCare of Life..as retired military. Cheers and Happy Holidays. RH-Florida

@westernflyer Hey bud, just an FYI from someone who learned the hard way. Saw Palmetto will also stop or lower your PSA - but has no impact on cancer progression.
So the PSA reading might be a false one; not trying to be a buzzkill, and I sincerely hope your PSA rise is indeed, arrested.
But even certain RX drugs can lower PSA and docs are always on the lookout for them in your medical history.

True, the prostate gland is a troublesome location on the human body. There was a study by doctors at Mayo most recently. I posted the information overview and the link, but the Mayo blog manager apparently took the information down. Essentially, the natural ingredient in the spouts appears to slow down cancer cell generation. That was the bottom-line summation of the Mayo study. Just searched on line for my entry: Here is the entire link and summation:

The study tested whether blocking sPOM121-driven cancer programs like beta-catenin could improve the effectiveness of treatments such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, which help the immune system attack cancer.)

NOTE AS: Sulforaphane
This compound is an isothiocyanate produced when the glucoraphanin in cruciferous vegetables is chopped or chewed.
Foods: Broccoli, especially young sprouts, is considered the most significant dietary source. Other cruciferous vegetables containing sulforaphane include:
Broccoli sprouts
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Kale
Bok choy
Mechanism: Sulforaphane promotes the degradation of beta-catenin and inhibits the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway, which is often overactive in some cancers.
THERE ARE MANY FIRMS TO INCLUDE AMAZON THAT SELL SULFORAPHANE IN PILL OR POWDER FORM. Something to ask your doctor. READ THE ARTICLE THEN DO "AI" ON THE NET FOR MORE AND DETAILED INFORMATION. REMEMBER, KNOWING "ALL" MAKES FOR BETTER AND MORE INFORMED DECISIONS.

@melvinw My husband has always eating pretty well, cut carbs, no sugar etc.
He's always been a gym rat too (weight lifting)
So it just goes to show that you can be healthy and work out and you can still get cancer!
You can also eat garbage and stuff and live a long life!

@soli I think a reasonably healthy diet, moderate exercise and sensible life style will go a long way in fending off cancer. Moderation in anything and everything is the key including what are considered health foods. Otherwise your body will probably let you know.
FYI, You may want to check out my post(s) in the prostate cancer forum. I shared my last 2 years ( posts every 6 months) after treatment experience.

@eldorado80

Thanks for the advice.

Even before my cancer diagnosis, I had a very healthy mediteranean style diet with ZERO fast or ultra processed foods. And I exercise daily. But, given my high genomic and pathological risk for BCR post surgeryy, I would like to turbo-charge my body's natural defenses against mocrospopic cancer cells which will invetibably attempt to multiply uncontrollably given the right conditions. Dr. William Li and others strongly believe the right foods can help fortify your body's natural defense mechanisms. Dr. Li - who has done extensive scientific research on the topic and written several books about it - mentions fruits like cantelope and figs, nuts like walnuts and almonds, veggies like brocoli and tomatoes (and yes brocoli sprouts) , sea foods like salmon and trout, and whole grains (like steel cut oatmeals), plus drinks like green tea and black coffee are excellent in help your body's defenses against cancer. I was pleased to see that many of these food groups have already been mentioned by participants of this discussion thread.
I have began incorporating Dr. Li's recommendations on my already-very healthy mediterranean style diet, with hopes of preventing (or at least delaying for very long) BCR.

@westernflyer Hello, Good information for sure. I will add that broccoli sprouts might be worth considering. Do your own research, but sprouts have proportionally much more sulforaphane than fully grown plants. Therefore just a little (hopefully) might help.

I have begun sprouting them at home, Simple,, seeds, water glass jar with a mesh cap (all easily found on Amazon or at The Sprouting Comany). I do NOT have a green thumb and the sprouts always turn out fine.
thank you
