Has anyone had multiple ankle surgeries?

Posted by cwagner251 @cwagner251, Nov 21, 2025

I broke my ankle back in March of 2023. When I first went to the ER they could not set it, so the had to preform a surgery to set an exterior fixator while recovering in the hospital they were going to put me in a rehab for my swelling to go down for about a month. My insurance from work only covered preventative so instead they decided to do ankle surgery the next day assuming because my insurance. After recovering from this I was never able to walk without a CAM boot this went on for a little over a year, until my job that was allowing me to work even with my walker until it started to affect my productivity. I lost my job and was forced on medicaid due to not being able to walk well enough to be able to work elsewhere. While I had medicaid I decided I needed to see what I need to get back to walking without assistance from a boot and cane and my surgeon recommended an ankle fusion I agreed. I had the third surgery on my ankle in September 2025 which was done arthriscopiccaly. After my two week check up he noticed that one of the screws had slipped and rushed me back into another surgery a week after my checkup to correct the issue this time he opened me up. I went to the two week check up this time and the screws and hardware looked great which was good news. I got my cast taken off yesterday and noticed I couldn't even make my ankle touch the ground after my new x-rays my surgeon wants to preform another surgery this time up towards the middle of my foot to try to straighten the bones there. Im going on 2 years in March of not being able to walk on my own. Im having a hard time dealing with all the surgeries and my body doesn't feel like it's okay. Is there anyone out there thats been through anything similar? Sorry for the long post and possible punctuation errors

@cwagner Welcome. My story started like yours with an external fixator and then internal plates a few weeks later. I had pain from the hardware and had it removed after a year and a half.

I’m sorry you’ve been through so much trouble and now an ankle fusion that doesn’t sound right. Can you get an opinion from another doctor? Would you be able to have a custom brace or special shoe instead of surgery that could help you reach the ground for walking?

@jenniferhunter thanks for the response. There's not too many options in the area I live but, I researched what my dr put in my notes and the medical term for the surgery that he plans on doing next is osseous correction surgery which involves even more plates and screws. Says its to correct a deformity and comes with a high level of after surgery pain. These last two years have really just got me down from the lack of work and sitting around all the time. Ive filed for disability and got rejected but I may have found a work from home position, but its not really my specialty as ive spent the last 6 years as a production supervisor in a manufacturing plant before all of this. Sometimes everything just doesn't seem fair in life.

@cwagner251 I hear you. You have a lot to deal with. Sometimes to get another surgical opinion, travel is needed to get to a respected medical center. If your surgeon hasn’t done a lot of these types of corrections, you need to know that. You also need to know what life will be like after a surgery like this. Perhaps one of our moderators could share his experience with fused ankles. I hope @JustinMcClanahan will join in and share his experience.

As for being denied disability, will you try again? Will you get assistance from a disability attorney?

@jenniferhunter I currently have an appeal going with a lawyer on my disability hoping to hear something soon. I looked at my after care report from my surgeon and he is planning on doing an osseous correction surgery after my pain is managed correctly. Ive been trying to stay positive and im glad I found this site because it definitely helps hearing from people with similar issues and I thank you for all the advice!

Hi guys. My situation I broke my ankle and had surgery on june30. I have 3screws and 1 metal plate. My first appointment with the foot doctor was 2 month later i complained of lots of netve pain so he kept my splint on . Basically i had the splint on for almost 3 month and a half. So my foot got stiff in a bad position when he tried to put the camboot he was not able to because my of my foot position. So he sends me to the PT.
Im working very hard on getting my ankle to move mind you no shoe. I'm on my 11th day therapy. I'm so afraid . My heel does not touch the floor when I'm standing yet. My foot looked like foot dropped. Although is looking a little better. It's been 5 month i can't walk yet 😪 normally ppl walk after 3 month. Anybody has a similar experience?
Plus i still feel the nerves tingling on my toes. I'm on 100mg gabapentin 4x a day.

That is similar to how im feeling now. If i have my cam boot on I can use a walker and sometime just a cane to get around but without my boot my ankle will not touch on its own. That's why my surgeon said he was going to do another surgery I haven't had any pt yet tho he said he wanted me to have the other surgery first

My doctor said go to PT and if it wont go down he can do a small incision in the back tendons to Loosen up the foot. I don't even have the option of ths cam boot. So i will try my best to exhaust all my therapy. I wish you well. I heard it's suppose to be a fast surgery.
